choosing which baby

Postby arajonny » Tue Aug 07, 2012 7:57 am

I have put a deposit down on a baby female greenwing macaw. She is with another greenwing and a catalina, which is sold as well, and a harlequin, which is available. i have been visiting the greenwing since she was really little, and now that she is around three months old, she does not want me to pick her up, and shows no interest in me when out on the play gym with her "clutchmates" if you will. The harlequin however does show active interest in me and likes me to hold him. When i would take the greenwing off the perch and bring him to the other side of the store, she would struggle and jump, and climb to get back to the perch. Anyway my question would be if you think i should switch and go with the harlequin instead because he seems to be more interactive with me? Will the greenwings bond switch to me when i get her home? Also everytime i visit the greenwing isnt chewing or playing, she usually is just sitting there either napping or inactive. Are female macaws more like this or do you think something might be wrong. Anyway maybe i am just being picky but i want this bird to be a good fit, thank you for your time and feedback.

You know I had a similiar situation. We were getting a Military Macaw and were down to the last week of weaning .I could tell this bird was going to need alot of training. My daughter liked the Catalina [the rainbow one] I tried to tell her she was too big [big beak] .Well the last day I dont know what made me want to pick her up but I did .She put her head against my chest and very gently tasted my fingers.I knew she was the ONE .Im so lucky the guy let me switch [shes the the love of my life ]Most gentle [with her beak] of all my birds. Not that she didnt need to be trained and not eat the blinds :D I read one of the reasons they were doing Hybrids was because of their temperment.I think there might be some truth to that.Anyways congratulations on your Macaw baby. You will have to let us know what you decide and what you name her :D

Thank you. I spoke with one of the store persons and they said the brother and sister (mine) greenwings have developed a really strong bond. So they are going to separate them. While i was there, the brother would put his wing around her and snuggle......i cant compete against that! but we will see after some time if this will help i guess. She also would chase and pinch other customers away if they tried to pet her brother. well, we'll see.
