jack jack wants to fly again

Postby trueloveway » Fri Aug 10, 2012 9:36 pm

I made the choice to clip my senegal's wings a few months ago. Yes, i know now about clipped parrots, but at the time i did it out of fear and ignorance. Now I notice that he does want to try and fly again. sometimes when he is out he spreads his wings like he wants to off, he normally doesnt. other times he actually does launch (normally off my shoulder) Is there any advice for helping Jack? i think hes a little reluctant

No, he just needs to keep getting hurt and injured from falling down until he realizes that he should stop trying to fly. That's how the "psychology of clipping" is supposed to work...

Let him grow them back out.
Make the area as safe as possible by keeping him over soft things, cushioning under places he might try to land etc.
He may need to learn his balance and landing distances all over again. It should come back to him quickly as he has been flighted before.

Keep putting him on the floor. He will practice jumping up to fly and won't have so far to fall. When he is able to get some altitude he will have his muscles built up again to fly.

Well he can learn to fly again... but just your luck, he'll finally stop trying to fly by the time the new feathers come in and then you'll have to start over again on encouraging flight. This is why I'm against clipping short or for a little while.

I totally agree, Michael. I got him tamed at this point, and we have a great relationship, but now I'm wondering whether or not clipping his wings killed his confidence. I'm pretty sure that he'll figure it out, because he's the smartest bird ever! (i am of course very unbiased ;))

In some aspects yes my bird is the smartest in the world. But to be honest most of the time hes like goofy. Gila hasn't really been here long enough and still gets a lil frighten sometimes when I'm around so I dunno about her, but Polarn chews on anything left behind, occationally plates peekaboo with the tv. He's basically a special Olympic contestant with disabilities:) but I love him anyways and he's a hoot having around.
