do i give my lovey too much freedom?

soo i had my lovebird for like 3 weeks now. and she seems to go on my fingers often. i always let her out the cage from 8am to around 4 pm. recently i started to put a food bowl on top of the cage so she can peck at the food as she flies around my room. she only comes to me if i have food in my hands and im always about to bring her back into the cage this way.. lately she seems to have avoided going inside her cage and when i try putting her in she flies away.. should i not take her out the cage for that long? am i spoiling her?

Yes put her on a out of cage time schedule .

i don't think your spoiling her mine are out from 8 am to 8 pm.you should stop feeding her outside of her cage though. mine put themselves back in at the same time everyday because they get a bedtime treat.

Unless you are trying to entice a bird out of it's cage all food should be given inside. That is it's home. Though Rambo and Myrtle don't have a cage door their food and water is inside. They also know that is their safe zone if they get scared. If there is a fire in the house they will go to their cage so I don't have to look for them. You can give treets outside the cage as a reward for coming to you.

As was mentioned, never feed outside of cage except in training treats. Make it a positive experience to go back to cage. I coincide bed-time (back in cage) with feeding time at night. That way my sees going back in his cage as a rewarding experience (gets his "yum yums") If you put back in between feeding times even a small treat will make this process a rewarding one for the bird.
