My new cockatiel sits already on my finger

Postby Baptiste » Tue Aug 28, 2012 4:30 am

So I just got my new 5 month old cockatiel yesterday.Today I already put my hand in the cage and he's fine with that. Then I've put a stick against his belly and he steps up, now I put my finger under his belly and he just goes up. But the thing is I got it from a bird shop and he wasn't handtamed.
Is he already tame or is he soooo afraid?

My initial thought is that you might want to try hold a really small peice of millet or some other goodie a little bit away from him and see if he "walks up calmly" to take it or seems really skittish when taking it if he takes it at all. If he isn taking it or looks afraid as he does I personally wouldn't poke the belly to get him to step up until he doesn't look skittish receiving treats, even then I wouldn't really poke him to step up but rather lure him with treats to walk up to the hand and stepping up without you moving the hand. If he does walk up to it and step up when lured with treats I would rule out fear. Atleast rule it out to not be too great of a fear they need to overcome it anyways, but in their own phase.

If he was not scared he would have been trying to communicate on the first day.

Remember that it is just a baby and you have taken him from everything he has ever known.

Open his cage and let him come out and explore his new world.
