Won't stop biting

Postby AuraKiwi&Jala » Wed Sep 05, 2012 10:09 pm

I have had my green cheek conures for 3 months now and Kiwi is still biting.
I have tried to observe him closely and predict/ understand why and when his urge arises...
The only time he stops biting is during training ( which also requires a few minutes for him to become soft and sweet)
He bites :
-when I approach the cage
- when the are away from the cage he will come to me ...to bite ( even if I give him / them no attention)
- he go for my feet when they are on the floor
- when I come over to the cage to change food/ water
( when I extend the perch, all 3 come happily running , kiwi only occasionally tries to nip me when he s on the perch, usually to let me know he want s off)
This seems to be his only interaction with me, even though he seems to seek my attention
The biggest challenge is that he BITES HARD , right away till he brakes skin every time.
This obviously makes it hard for me to not react or stand firm

Somebody please help, I love them all dearly and would like to change my relationship for the better
I ve tried (or impulsivelay had) many reactions , from no reaction, to saying loudly -no biting etc... Doesn t seem to matter
Now his siblings are imitating his behaviour( only around the cage and not nearly as hard)

An unflighted bird has emotional as well as physical problems. Dodge or deal with the bites. Let the wings grow. Flighted means happy. Happy is easier to deal with.

I have a 7 month old sun conure that is beating the crap out of us.She is my first conure, she nips really hard [but does not break the skin] Most of my birds have been through this nipping stage .But she seems the worst so far. What Ive been working on with her [thats working a little] I take her out and put her on a playstand for awhile. Then go to see her [and verbally gush over her ]see her for a short period then put her back.Visit her and take her out more for short periods of time making a huge deal about her.Shes started to do kissing sounds back to me. :D

I noticed that you said he bites to let you know he wants to get down from his perch and when he first sees you... I'm certainly no expert, and I understand that it's extremely difficult not to react when a bird bites so hard that they draw blood, but it sounds like somewhere along the line he learned that biting was a way of getting what he wants. In a manner of speaking, now he's got your number...

You have to teach him that you won't react to biting anymore.

I know how you feel about chasing feet, my idiot boyfriend has managed to teach ollie is was a fun game. Feet are sensitive, if you can't tolerate standing there and letting the bird get bored of it like a psychopath like I did always always wear slippers or something so you don't react to the bites.

Once ollie realised he gets no reaction, he no longer chases my feet but it is still a truely awesome game he plays with my boyfriends and the kids but they won't listen to me and instist on squeeling and moving their feet away. My boyfriend has alot to answer for really.

Stitch is fascinated with toes, he likes to run down my leg, when Im lying on the sofa, for a bite in the toe  . There's no agression in it, he's just doing it because toes are fun in his world ^^.

I try to put my legs down from the sofa when he's out and about ;).

Anticipate what she wants before she has a chance to bite.

I had a cat that did not like picked up. She would hiss and spit then bite me. To teach her it was not a bad thing to be picked up I would scoop her up, give her head scratches and put her down before she could react. She now comes to me for head scratches then wiggles when she wants down.

Myrtle did not want me to pick her up at first. She had always been grabbed. I would push her to step up, give her a kiss and put her back down. Since it only lasted a second she learned that being picked up was not bad.

Myrtle loves "tickle tickle" but only lets me touch the front of her. Not the back of her head or her back. She does allow me to flip her over why we do the tickle. While on her back I reach under and tickle her back. I say "coochie coochie". It is starting to work that I can touch her back from under her.

It is not easy and takes a long time but you can do it if you can anticipate how long she wants to do something.
