He wont shut up !!!

Postby daniel.lloydwilliams » Thu Sep 13, 2012 10:37 am

My ring neck rio is now about 12-16 mths. (rescue bird) since we have had him he is not a noisy bird.
he does his cute little calls during the day and makes the odd loud high pitched screech every once in a while.
But now he just keeps going and going and going just screech screech screech. yesterday it went on for almost 6 hours.

He has a massive cage. His flight feathers have grown back and from 9am till bed he gets the run of the house.

he eats his breakfast and tea with us and normally has the same food.
But if he does not shut up soon I can see the BBQ sauce coming out and me having spicy parrot wings for tea :(

I just met some ring necks and they are loud!! Wowsers. They definitely can get on rants sometimes too.

I would make sure that nothing is scaring your critter. I read an article about a man who said he was going insane because his cockatoo kept shrieking nonstop and then after quite a few days he realized it was because there was nearby construction work that was bothering his feathered friend. Try relocating the cage to a more secure location, quieter perhaps.

Also make sure he has plenty of fun toys and try foraging with him. If your parrot is occupied searching for treats or his daily meal he won't be screaming! In the wild they spend large portions of the day foraging for food. :]
http://www.avianweb.com/foragingfood.html some ideas, but you can just google around.

I know its hard but try to ignore the noise and only pay attention to him when he is quiet.

I think ringnecks are known to be fairly loud from what I've heard but if this behaviour is unusual for him it might be worth getting him a check up with a vet just to rule out illness or injury.

Or it could be because he is maturing, I'm not sure what age IRNs hit maturity but thast could also explain the change in behaviour, it might be something you want to research if you don't know what age it kicks in.

Has there been any other behavioural changes or environmental changes/changes in routine?

Might be a contact call thing.Birds live in flocks you are his flock.DONT IGNORE HIM.He might have become insecure and needs his confidence built back up.When he makes a sound you like make a super big deal about it even if your in the other room.Birds are slow at resolving things it might take him awhile he needs a chance. :D
