8 week old GCC

Postby Bentley » Sat Sep 22, 2012 6:47 pm

hi all... new member here so be gentle :D

picked up a stunning little GCC last week :gcc: and im loving him, he's a really funny little bird
now all seems well for the most part, he's seems a happy little fella, steps up, recalls pretty well, nice and quiet and always wants to be out of the cage with you and is happy to be picked up, laid on his back or just likes to snuggle under the wife's hair

the only slight issue were having is when he's out and playing around he can get very excited and can get a bit nippy, happends when he's being a grumpy sod as well, nothing major yet but i dont want it to develop into something more serious.
he's got the wife quite hard sometimes when she's tried taking him off her shoulder/neck and id like to know what the best course of action is to curb this behaviour

im sure this has been asked a million times before but Ive literally just joined so not had chance to read many of the threads

any help would be much appreciated

oh yes the nippy :gcc: those of us that live with them know it well. my penny :gcc: loves being on my shoulder so when he went through this i gave him a gentle shove off my shoulder but let him fly right back until he did it again. it didn't take more than a couple days for him to get i don't like it and he stopped. it can get worse if you let it go on :gcc: are a large bird in a small body and can become bullies mine has actually drawn blood on the neighbor kids because he knows they are afraid of him and purposely lands on their things to mess with them.don't scream ever it only incourages harder and more frequent attacks i don't know if he likes to make people scream but he always goes straight for the ones that do.

Completely agree with previous post but things can improve for sure, My little GC nipped so much for a while that I was at my wits end on how to stop him because nothing I was doing appeared to be working but I perservered and he did stop. These days he very rarely bites and if he does its always my fault.

You can discourage the behaviour by completely ignoring him.
Don't let him make you nervous or anxious around him as that will make things worse, always approach the bird with confidence.
learn the little signs that he gives off before he gets too carried away and then distract him or walk away from him for a short time. Make sure your the one to go back to him.
Both of you need to work together and stick to the same rules, whilst the biting can still be overcome towards one person I do believe it slows down the process if the other is encouraging the bites.

Beware of playing with foot toys with him. Its the one thing I cannot do with Ollie as he always end up going completely off the rails with over excitement and he will literally chase me with feathers spread out and sheer aggression. When we do play with toys I keep it really short and hide a treat or two in them to keep his mind focused on finding them.

I agree with all of the above.

Remember that he is a tiny baby at 8 weeks old. A human baby can cry and complain if something is wrong. If they are hungry, tired or upset with something going on they will cry. Your baby can't do that. Be attentive to him and what is happening around him.

Whatever happens just remember that he is a tiny baby. With love and care he can become the happiest part of your life.

Enjoy that he is a baby while he is. Everything around him is new in his eyes. When mine get a new food or new experience it is like watching a child learn and grow.
