Hitting a brick wall/Running out of ideas

Postby Electic » Tue Nov 20, 2012 10:49 pm

Hey, so I've recently added a male Eclectus to my flock and I've had a couple questions, it's almost as if I've reverted to a beginner bird owner, I had a teething stage with my female eclectus but it was never to this degree, the male bites down hard and I do the proper no reaction, ignore bad behavior reinforce good, he's a bit stubborn so I use lures to sort of bridge the behavior and slowly phasing out the lure. Is that the proper way to do it? He's still 4 months and has no concept of trick training. Also, I find it hard to spend time with him, out in the living room, he wants to go back into the room with his cage in it, and when he's out of his cage, he prefer to be on his cage, rather than a playstand, but when I take him off the playstand he prefers to go back to the cage again, if I'm making sense. Regardless, he hasn't a real interest in hanging out with me and I feel guilty since I give my female full and uninterrupted attention where as he doesn't really let me because it doesn't seem like he wants to. Any information will be great, thanks.

when your feeding him seeds whatever his favourites are pick them all out first and for a few days keep him on seeds only no vegetables or nuts so its like anything becomes a good reward and after about 3 days of the boring seeds start target training him it doesnt matter if hes very young

ive had my :rainbow: now for about 2 weeks and i weaned him my self about a week ago and he only just learned to chew apples and pear yesterday so hes very young probably no older than 3 mnths and has no tailfeathers and a possible broken or dislocated toe but ive been able to target training him with my finger so he learns to trust my hands and every time i go to his cage i give him his favourite treats so he associates me with something good

i also dont use a clicker because a new bird who doesnt trust you and is scared get startled very easily and may become more scared of you

ive been training my lorikeet for 3 days now and he can traget, fly tom me, spin and step up so i wouldnt say your bird is to young

Well he is still learning how to eat properly, think it wouldn't affect the progression of training?

I don't think it would

When I got my :rainbow: he couldn't eat fruit or veggies or didn't know what nectar powder was
And it was hard because I couldn't afford rearing mix and it was hard for him to eat and because of his injuries he so and when I finally weaned him onto the powder he started learning quickly.

I also have to find way to distract him because his cage Is like his safe place and flys back when he gets startled just
Just let him go at his own pace when he gets tired if he wants to stop than try again later but even if he can't eat properly its ok my corella couldn't eat properly and he's trained now

And should I train with the traditional target stick like my female eclectus is or with the finger like you've done? I think stick is better but not sure

If he's a biter than use a stick or chopstick or something just till you can use your finger

If you can use your finger it helps them to learn to trust your hands and will have no reason to be scared than you can start training properly

So much useful information! Yes it doesn't seem he looks like he's biting out of aggression and has plenty of chew toys to keep his beak busy. Perhaps he does get bored outside without any toys on my hand. I'll start giving him things to play with, but I read anxiety when he's away from his cage, so I'm not sure if it'll help too much, he much rather be on a playstand/cage which is similar to how Shyla grew up and it really tore at me, she was my first bird and I didn't know why she wanted nothin to do with me but if you look at the picture that's on my profile, it shows what we've overcome. :)
