Taming scared lovebird

Postby Kimmy1969 » Wed Nov 21, 2012 10:44 pm

I have two lovebirds and I bought them from another owner they can fly but I'm scared to take them out of they're cage because they might fly away.when ever I come close like sit next to they're cage or walk by they start to fly around crazy. I want to make a strong bond with them. I love them sooooooooooo much I'm asking you because it looks like you have a strong bond with your birds and one day hopefully I'll creat one with my bird. Thank you for your time!

How long have you had them? If its only been a couple days they are probably still nervous about their surroundings, as well as you. One thing about birds is that if they don't recognize an object they automatically assume it is dangerous. Better safe than sorry, right?

If they have been with you for a bit you best bet is to approach their cage slowly and stop as soon as they get restless. Then just stand their quietly, smiling, or maybe talking softly, until they calm down. Then just walk away. Your leaving is the reward, but they need to learn they won't get it unless they are calm. Eventually you'll be able to move closer and closer until you are right next to the cage. Then you can begin feeding them little treats through the bars so that they now associate you with food. And then continue on with getting them used to your hands in the cage, etc.

Because they can fly and aren't bonded to you, I would suggest having them in a room with a closed door so that they don't just fly away across the house. Wrangling frightened birds is never fun, or easy.

Good luck! I hope that helped!

It will probably take up to a month for them to bond with you.

One day you'll notice that they want to be near you and be with you and then that's how you'll know
