taming an uninterested parrot

Postby Pricey_boy » Mon Dec 03, 2012 10:56 am

im just starting taming a galah hes about 3-4 yrs old.

im not sure what to give him for treats he doesnt really enjoy sunflower seeds, wont accept scratches ive tried leaving the room and than he just cries for attention but when i come back in the room he doesnt want me near him.

ive tried other treats like nuts other seeds, crackers, native plants and letting him out its like he doesnt eat the food for the enjoyment but more because he has to

Does your galah tolerate your touch? Or does he try to bite you when you touch him? Is your galah aggressive or just uninterested?
If he's just not interested and like you said whines when you leave the room, maybe just sit near him for a while. That way he can get used to your presence.
I'm actually trying to tame my galah as well, he's also about 3. He would come down from the top of his cage and walk to me if I ignore him and sit close by doing something else- such as reading.

Treats will probably depend on what your galah's current diet is. Try apples or dried corn, maybe it would work for you also.

Hope everything goes well in your taming.

Ah, maybe he just likes being difficult...
I've just come across this thread about taming your parrot under a bedsheet- I don't know if it'll work but I'm going to try it. Maybe it'll work for you?

when walter comes out of his cage and onto a stand hes extremely happy and will mimic you talking but the only way to get him out is to just grab him but i dont want to do that and if i leave the cage door open than he will maybe come out after 3 hours+

i read that taming under the blanket article but it seems a bit silly if their bird keeps flying off then train in a room where his cage is not present and there is absoulutly no where to fly to.

walter is a strange bird and has strange behaviours like dancing when he gets mad or sitting on his perch with a toy under his wing and fall asleep for hours.

walter is the bird i was talking about and its funny because he has the name of an old person

He sounds so adorable! And at least you have a sense of humor.
I really do hope you manage in taming him. Best of luck to you. If I find anything that works I'll let you know.

might be weird for a galah but mine actually prefers millet spray... well so does my amaon but the bigger beaks leaves such a big mess and you ahve to control how much they get as a nip with your finger or they will take the whole thing from you...
