Hard to tame Senegals

Postby seye » Mon Dec 03, 2012 11:39 pm

I recently made purchases of 2 Senegals from someone who seemed to want to get rid of them. They seem to have serious trust issues and from the look of things, they were wild caught(i live in Nigeria)

I have tried clicker training them. But it's just so hard because when they see me coming, they both perch to one corner and remain there stiff for up to an hour without moving, for as long as I am there. It's been about 3 months now and they don't seem to even break. I am sure it would have been far easier if there was only one but that's too late now.

Is there anything I can do or I'm not doing?

Try forgetting the training for the moment. Get a chaiir, sit at the nearest point to them you can get to without them reacting to you and just sit and talk to them, or read a book out loud if you don't know what to say. Gradually move the chair closer and closer to the cage as they get comfortable with you being there. This process might take days, or it might take weeks but its all about getting them used to your presence and not only that, being comfortable with you being nearby. Whilst you are doing this, pay no attention to them, no sudden movements and don't look at them apart from the odd glance to note their behaviours.

Once they are completely at ease with you sitting directly outside the cage you can then start offering treats through the cage bars, again, try to pay them little in the way of attention, just speak softly- let them come down to the treat, dont try to put it too near to where they are sat. Again its just a matter of patience, it could take days or weeks, possibly even months to get the courage to come but whatever you do dont give up. I would try to get to this point before you try to resume any training with them, they need to be very comfortable with you.

If theyre wild caught then they never be tamed but you should keep trying. Maybe you could seperate them and do them individually each day

i agree with both of the above. another great way to bond is sharing your dinner, as long as it's bird safe. you can easily find what not to feed online.
