Turn around?

Postby Galah » Sat Dec 08, 2012 12:17 pm

I've watched videos but Johnny and I just don't get it. I think he's starting to think I've lost my mind. We got step-up and target training down- we practice everyday. But I'm trying to teach him his first proper trick... Do any of you have advice or a link to a proper video of how to do the turn-around?
We've been doing target training for about 5days now and step-up even longer. Am I rushing it?

Yes :).

The first trick can take a while, but once they learn how to learn, it may speed up! Until then, have patience, push your parrot when you see that he's thinking, and take small steps. You will make progress I am sure =).

Does he follow the stick around yet, if you try to make a turn around by leading him around?

Do you already target train whilst moving the target so the bird has to follow it? If not your bird might not understand why the target keeps moving and that he should follow it.

You may succeed in training him a different trick first so he'll catch on that you're trying to teach him something, that's what I had to do with my parrotlet. Also, he wasn't responding to the target training very well so I went with the showing him his favorite treat and leading him with the treat just out of reach but rewarding him as soon as the trick was completed. I chose the summersault for this first trick since it was the easiest way to lead him without him just snatching up the treat half way thru.

Show him something really simple at first and reward frequently, even if he can only complete part of what you're showing him, then when he does complete the trick, give him the jackpot (extra treats)and lots of praise. Do this first trick (whichever trick is easiest for him to learn) often and reward for it accordingly then move back to the turn around after he knows you're trying to show him something.

Once the bird learns one trick, he'll usually learn new ones a bit quicker and you can slowly raise the difficulty level of the tricks as he learns.
