Need help to re-socialize previously tame/handled cockatiels

Postby mwilters » Sat Jan 12, 2013 4:17 pm

So, I have two cockatiels that I have had for around 10 years. When I first got them, I was able to handle them and play with them. They were always willing to step up onto my finger and exit their cage. The problem is that I was really young when I got them and didn't really keep up with handling them. That being said, I haven't been able to handle them for around 8 years. They will let me rub their heads when they stick them through the bars of the cage but freak out when I try to get them to step up on my finger.

Anybody have an ideas or suggestions to how I can train them to be tame again? Is it a lost case?

Thanks

hi mwilters, i think reading a thread titled "Harlies progress" written by forum member marie83, about her experience in taming her cockatiel, will really help you:

Hi, its absolutely possible to re-tame your two 'tiels. If you go onto Michaels trained parrot blog then there are some excellent articles on taming and training birds, they make an excellent read and even if you already know most of it they are still interesting and a good refresher. You will have to start from the very begining but I'm pretty sure it wont take long at all to earn their trust back given that they already trust you to scratch their heads through the bars.

Good luck and if you have any questions, just ask us.

Thanks marie83! I am reading Michael's tips and they seem very helpful. I can't wait to get started and see how if it works.
