Recall problem w cockatoo who prefers to walk over flying

Postby CheroneseGirl » Mon Jan 14, 2013 6:12 pm

I'm having a lot of trouble teaching MissChief target/recall via flight.

Once the perches are separated out of her reach, she gets frustrated, paces a couple of times and attacks the perch. I distract her, position the perches a tad closer to each other and continue but as soon as they're out of her reach I'm back to square 1.

She doesn't hop back & forth between perches, she steps between them. She'll stretch as faaar as she can in order to get to perch B. There's times she'll be doing a split between perches that last several seconds before she's able to get her beak into the action and pull herself over. I thought I was prepared to continue back and forth/further apart until she used her wings but I didn't consider she may try & tear up the perches! This happens only during recall sessions when she can't reach perch B or my arm.

I've only seen MissChief fly when frightened by a loud sudden noise. This has only occurred in the house where space is limited, so, I've never seen her in full flight as I have Bijoux (conure/acrobat, who sometimes flies laps before returning to cage). Instead, she flaps a couple of times before landing in another room. She only flaps her wings when swinging upside down from a toy/rope/my hand and during showers.

Lack of confidence? Strength? Knowledge?
She was clipped when I got her, which was a few years ago. She's flown/flapped/coasted from one room of the house into another but obviously out of instinct vs intent.

Any suggestions on this will be appreciated :)
