Melody is a my hen. Shes very quirky and quite smart. Mulgas are grass parakeets so they are often on the ground eating seeds and grasses, for the most part, in the southern plains of Australia.
She has her moments but for the most part she is my shoulder bird. She doesnt squawk, she doesnt scream, but she loses her mind when I or my wife are not in eye sight of her cage. Usually starts with some soft chiming and quick pacing on her perch, following by a few loud chirps that will go on for roughly 2-3 minutes or until we are back in her sight. Walking out the door to go to work is hard on her since she is SO attached to my hip. I'v also learned from research that they are much better suited for aviary life since they prefer to spend most of their time on the ground and because of that, she gets to roam the house outside of her cage when ever there is someone there to keep an eye on her. She's very fond of her scratchies and allows me to preen and clean her and can get very overslimulated. Once i start, im not allowed to stop lol. (shell dive under my hands as I type this so i will continue scratching her head. She also loves it if i make a cave (or house) with my hands. She'll rush to get under and just poke her head out and chirps softly and will often quickly fall asleep here. (They have been known to burrow or make sub surface nests, so i can only guess this is what she likes on a more natural level)
My overall outlook on this species is quite nothing short of amazed that they are not more popular.
They are sweet, beutifully colored, quiet, and loving birds that can be a bit timid or shy at first. Given a few weeks of play and handling, treats and toys, getting her trust was so simple. The bond that we share every morning while i drink my coffee, or when im playing video games and she wants to climb all over my controller while i play (hard to do btw, which is why she has her own controller lol.) makes me charrish her as my companion all the more.
