What bird is this?

Postby mollyCA » Mon Mar 11, 2013 3:39 am

Hi there,
I'm going to colorize this old picture, but I have no idea what bird this is or what kind of colors it might have had.
Any help would be much appreciated!

it looks to me like a jardine's parrot.... just a guess...

there are a bunch of people on this forum who have experience with jardines and might be able to tell you if my guess is right or not. :)

What is the picture for? :swaying:
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

I've seen about 10000 jardine's picture by now and I can say with 99% certainty that that is NOT a Jardine's. The beak is all wrong. it's drastically undersized.

edit: other problems are the stance, size, and shading. Most jardine's comfortably stand more perpendicular to their feet, are stockier and taller, larger than a senegal and smaller than timneh depending on subspecies. The jardine's shading would put regular black scalloping on the wings, black on the tip of the beak, and lighter on the ankles and crown.

All in all, I'd say if this were a jardine's it would be less than 6 months old, and at that age I still think it's absolutely not a jardine's.

Definitely not a Jardine's parrot!
Looks like a ring-neck or an eclectus to me

nah it's way to small to be an eclectus. waaaaay to small. too small for a ringneck even! and i do believe ringnecks have very long tails.

is it possible it could be some sort of poi? or a hybrid?

mystery bird! dun dun!

Looks kind of Aratinga conure to me, but I'm not sure! I don't think it's a Poi.

It does seem to resemble a larger conure or parakeet with a significant portion of his tail feathers cut off.

Definitely not Jardine's or Poicephalus for that matter. Looks like one of these in terms of shape, size, and beak:

Actually on second thought it might be any of the ones from this genus. Dig around:
