Soon to be Timneh owner

Postby Mrbill317 » Tue Apr 02, 2013 3:18 pm

So , I am a current parrot owner that is making the plunge to buy a bird in need of a new home. I have already met the beautiful Timneh African Grey and spent time with her and was easily won over.

The girl is 10 years old and will come with a huge cage, toys and more toys, play stand and more.

She eats very well and is on Harrison's pellets with the normal recommended foods.

I wanted to ask about transporting and taking her out of carrier for the first time. Should I just open it and let her come out when ready. Who knows she might adapt easily.
I was planning on setting up her cage like her old house , near tv and front window. My house is much larger then her current one.

Any suggestions from the experienced people here? She really is a doll and even owner surprised how she took to me and seemed to be calm when sitting on my forearm or in a chair. I brought her one of the treats she likes as an opening peace offering lol.

normally i would say she should be left in the cage for at least 1 day to get settled. she should be quarentined for about 6 weeks to make sure she's healthy and won't pass anything on to your :gcc: . when she's ready open the door and let her out on her own.my :corella: was different though like you i had spent time getting to know her before she came home. when the man fostering her brought her to my house she immediately made herself at home. she went right into her new cage started eating then talking and dancing around so we didn't have to wait a day.

i say put a little perch by the door and if he is on that perch, open the door and see if you get a positive response. But regardless i think 1 day inside the cage cant be bad.

I was also thinking of putting the carrier near the play stand. She has stepped up for me and I was even able to take her out of the cage myself. Not one threat of a bite or growl. She seemed social though had those birdie shivers for a minute or two.

I'm 42 and have good sized hands and strong arms, I think she felt safe.

Hopefully May 1st I will bring her home and show some pictures.
