Senegal Change

Postby SirHubi » Sun Jan 31, 2010 5:26 pm

Hello!

I heard that Senegal parrots heve yellow eyes if they old, but grey eyes if they are young. I was just wondering at what age do senegal parrots change colour of their eyes

I'm kinda wondering too cause Kili is 1 year and 8 months and her eyes are a silvery yellow but have barely changed since she was young. It will either happen later still or she is one of the subspecies that does not really change eye color. She's already starting her second molt.

I got Tamber when he was 8 months old, if memory serves. He had grey eyes. Now he is nearly
1-1/2 years old and his eyes are yellow. It happened so very gradually that I just never noticed. I remember reading about the color change when I first got him. Then I just forgot about it. Only about 3 weeks ago, I was working with him and realized his eyes were very definitely yellow!

I wonder if the different sub-species might have different rates as to when the eyes change.

FWIW.

My Senegal is three.
Her eyes are nowhere near the bright yellow I've seen in other Senegals.

I've actually read quite a few articles that talked about "blue eyed" Senegals (referring to the straw/silvery colour some Senegals have). I'm guessing this fits Shade, as she should have her adult colours by now.

Keeping in mind I tend to brighten up the eyes for a slightly more striking image..

You can see her eyes are more towards a straw yellow than the nice golden vivid yellow other Senegals have.

This may not be very helpful because I have no idea how old my senegal is but his/her eyes are bright yellow!

I wondered about the eye color as well, it seemed that there were a lot of videos of baby senegals on youtube and no adults, but I guess it just depends.

When I asked my breeder if my Senegal would get the mask that you see on some adult Senegals he said he might but in his experience it seemed to depend on how much direct sunlight they got. I wonder if this is also the case with they eye coloration?

Direct sunlight? Now that's very interesting because Tamber is right next to our living room window which faces due west. There might be something to this in his case.

I have some pictures to post FINALLY! I want 2 of them to appear here when I have time to figure out how to upload them. One picture I took of Tamber was dated for the end of November 2009 and he has grey eyes. I noticed the change at the end of January and I have a current picture where you can clearly see his now yellow eyes.

So this means that in his case his eyes were grey through 15 months old and by 17 months they had turned yellow. I do have his certificate of hatch, btw, so I am positive about his age.

I am still not ruling out the sub-species posibility as yet. Tamber has an orange vest and is likely mesotypus. I say likely because he is not ~as~ orange as I have seen and yet is definitely ~not~ yellow. So he at least has some mesotypus in his genes.

My Sennie is 1 yr and his eyes are still a dark grey/blackish color. I've had him since he was a month old and they are still for the most part the same color from when he was a baby. Has anyone else experienced this? They've lightened up slightly, but his really are a very dark grey, no yellow tint at all like the other "blue eyed" sennies. Actually, in the light his eyes really are almost a dark blue-grey.
