Cuddly, laid back, fairly quiet parrot?

Postby hlasdf » Tue Apr 09, 2013 5:28 pm

Hey guys! Sorry I've been posting so often heheh...
I'm obviously not getting a parrot any time soon seeing as how I just got Daisy a few months ago. But I'm thinking of another parrot I could get in the future that would suit me. After being with such an active, bitey bird like Daisy, I'm looking towards more laid back but still cuddly-ish birds. I was thinking of GCCs after hearing about how loving they were, but know how hyper and crazy they can get! Pionus also seemed like a choice since they're so calm, but I've read that they don't like to be touched and prefer to be very independent. After losing hearing in one of my ears for a while from Daisy's screeches, I'm also hoping to get a quieter bird. I understand that no parrot is completely quiet, and I can take noise, but probably couldn't handle something like aratinga screams. Cockatoos are definitely out of the question! I don't think I could ever have the experience to be able to care for one, nor handle the dust, though they are pretty awesome :). So what do you guys think? And am I asking for too much in a feathered friend?

Female cockatiels TEND to be more cuddly and laid back but it's not a guarantee. If you can get one tamed down that way or perhaps consider a hand reared? (We've had a mixture of parent raised and hand tame) Females can still be loud and vocal although it's quite rare.

Thanks for your input! I would've loved to get a cockatiel, but unfortunately, I can't handle the dust :(.

Maybe a Senegal? They are quiet usually and can be cuddly. Here is a video of mine. Also notice my budgie there but I don't recommend having small birds close to big ones. I know their personalities very well and even then i don't let them get too close. My budgie knows the rules as you will hear me say towards the end. But often they get separate out of cage times. But on occasion when they are both out, I pay close super vision. But ya a Senegal could work.

This specific video I was just working and he wanted scratches (him bowing his head). So I scratched him here and there. All on his terms. But usually he doesn't ever mind if I hold him and cuddle him but I never force it if he doesn't want it. And I can handle him anyway I want.

but any bird can have the capacity to scream and scream and scream. Harlie my female 'tiel is getting louder by the day, partly because its her breeding season now and partly because she is starting to test me with her newfound confidence.

My green cheek is also known as a quiet bird but when he gets going he goes on and on, usually I dont notice my birds screams but my partner does and he gets stressed by it which then draws my attention to it and then it irritates me too.

I actually think my partners to blame for the increase in noise, he just doesn't listen to me. so yea anyway part of the noise level is to do with upbringing but also some individuals within a species are louder than others. Even when my two were quieter they were still capable of screaming down my ear, making me jump and ended up with it ringing for the rest of the day.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! After some more research, I'm sorta leaning towards Meyers after reading that they're generally somewhat cuddly, intelligent, and not as active or loud as senegals. I'll still be open to any other suggestions though so keep posting!

I agree about Senegals. I've known four besides my own chick, and all are/were quiet and affectionate. All were also purchased as chicks...just sayin'. I know a lot of people really prefer to adopt a rescue, but if a certain type of behavior is a paramount consideration, it just makes sense that you'll have the most influence on a baby. I do respect people who believe otherwise, and there's no denying that lots of adult birds need good homes.

There's also no denying that the quality of the breeder and the unique personality of the bird play a big role with a baby. I may just know people who got very lucky with their Sennies. But regardless, they're very nice birds.

If you want your partner to listen to you more, try stroking his rod.
