Question about Parrotlets and Senegals

Postby toocrazy » Thu Apr 25, 2013 3:26 pm

I have a pair of semi tame, male Parrotlets that are bonded. They've been with me about a year and have gotten along just fine. Five days ago I got a year old Senegal. The cages are in different rooms so the birds haven't seen each other but they can hear one another. Today the Parrotlets were fighting. I opened the cage to see what was going on and the yellow one flew out and went right to my Senegal and started to regurgitate to it. The Senegal, which I'm going to guess now is a female, freaked out and flew to me and then the Parrotlet flew on my head to get her. She flew back to the cage and the Parrotlet also flew back and was chasing the Senegal all the while regurgitate to her. Does the Parrotlet want to make the Senegal it's mate and do I need to keep the 2 Parrotlets apart from now on? They are currently in the same cage but I have a piece of cardboard down the middle because I only have the one cage. Any advice on this crazy behavior?

Really crazy situation. Could just be that the parrotlet doesn't like who it "got stuck with" and would rather go with any other bird. But don't let it do this or be around the Senegal. The Senegal could easily take a parrotlet out.

The two Parrotlets have been together for 3 years. I did get him away from the Senegal and he's now back and happy with his cage mate. I've had parrots for over 10 years and have never seen anything like this. Thanks for the reply!

Be VERY careful. Plets are fearless and an in-your-face kind of bird which will fly to other birds but sennies are very jealous of any other bird paying attention to their chosen human and will retaliate. I know three separate cases of plets getting hurt (wings and legs) by sennies.
