Have 2 Senegals:

Hercules - female; yellow subspecies, !8 years old, acquired as a weaned, hand-reared chick. Thought to be male for 9 years! Loves me, adores my son, but will go to anyone who visits the house to greet them. Extremely playful and affectionate and very rarely bites; will tolerate anything but has a deep mistrust of elastic bands and the vacuum cleaner, which once tried to swallow her when she attacked the nozzle when it came near her cage. Says a few words and imitates the burglar alarm whenever we are about to leave the house; never at any other time. Is hyper-intelligent and knows what we are about to do long before we do it by observing our behaviour. Adores baked potato and apple cores.

Bubble - male; yellow subspecies but age unknown as he was a maltreated rescue 10 years ago (is probably about 14). Very aggressive at first, but after 9 years he will now accept petting form myself and my son and has stopped biting us, but very afraid of new people. Adores Hercules, but she only accepts food from him. He adores dried chillies and repeatedly jumping off his water pot onto the cage floor for the satisfying loud bang it produces. Hates my Meyers parrot, Goldie.

Please be cautious with the apple cores as the seed is toxic for your birds. The toxins build up slowly.

Oh, yes, please no apple seeds (or pears or any other pit like). Also, not to correct you but to inform you, the yellow bellied is not a subspecies, it's the nominate.

 I know what subspecies means. The yellow-vested sennie is what it's called the 'nominate' and not usually referred to as a subspecies by bird people although, from a taxonomy point of view, you could. The nominate is always the first species ever recognized, classified and named and this was Poicephalus senegalus. When and if they find variations to a species (some of them don't and they just retain the binome), they simply double the species name (the second one) to indicate this IS the nominate while the others have a different third name - so the yellow-vested became Poicephalus senegalus senegalus, the orange-vested was named Poicephalus senegalus mesotypus and the red Poicephalus senegalus versteri. With some species, the third name becomes the 'common' name of that subspecies as in the yellow headed amazons like the Panama (Amazona ochrocephala panamensis), the Tres Marias (Amazona ochrocephala tresmariae), the Belizean (Amazona ochorcephala belizensis).
