New 7 mos old senegal

Postby shallicrs » Sat Jun 01, 2013 5:52 pm

I just brought home a 7 mos old senegal and am happy I found this forum. I read that you should not disturb the bird for the first 72 hours (after he spent an hour sitting on my arm) I am concerned that he has not eaten or had a drink yet (he's been here about 3 hours) How much time can go by before I panic? Thanks for any advice!!

I've had a bird not eat or drink for two days... he won't because he's not settled. Just leave him alone in the quiet... eventually our little guy started eating when we were out of the room or under the cover :-D

You could also try and put some water on a spoon and offer it to him. I did that with both my birds, it worked.

Blaze (named by my granddaughters) is doing well. I have been giving him a good variety of fresh fruits and vegetables plus a little cooked food and some cereal. There seems to be no food that he doesn't like. He spends a lot of time tearing up his food - seems to shred more than he eats. Gave him a hot pepper which he loved. I have never seen him take a drink of water but I did notice that the water level in his bowl does go down. Worries me a little but he certainly wouldn't be active and have normal bird stools if he wasn't drinking some water.

If you saw him drink from his water bowl then you can be encouraged that he knows where is water source is. Also birds get some water from the foods they eat, esp. fruits and veggies. Give these at least twice a day, I do this in the am and then again about hour before the sunsets. Tearing up their food is a good sign, they enjoy that. Mine loves broccoli florets and the stems, separately. She picks the florets clean. I also give her some carrot, zucchini, dried hot peppers. Anything she can hold with her feet Nd eat. She isn't too keen on the leafy veggies yet.

I don't know which type of cereal you are talking about but please no human cereal! I know that most birdsites will tell you cheerios and stuff like that is fine but it's not. They are meant for humans and, as such, loaded with iron which is real bad for birds.

Parrots take about three gulps of water in the morning and another gulp or two in the pm. They are not 'programmed' by nature to drink a lot because, in the wild, they don't need it (they derive most of their hydration needs from the plant material they eat) and it's hard to find a good source for them to drink from (they need to dip their beak in the water but there aren't that many streams in the jungle and a bird standing next to one is a sitting duck for predators).
