Vasa, Timneh, Galah

Postby JaydeParrot » Sun Jun 02, 2013 11:01 am

I currently am content with having just two Senegals- They're more than enough trouble :).

But have thought in later years of getting a slightly bigger parrot in hopes of being able to more safetly take it out and about with me. I originally wanted a pionus but have become more interested in a slightly bigger and longer lived bird.

I'm really interested in Greater Vasas as they seem to have great temperments, look really gothic and from what I gather, are fairly quiet. There aren't many Vasas where I live, so I then looked at other parrots which interested me, the TImnehs, cuz they're great talkers but aren't as prone to screaming and phobias as Congos are. I also was interested in Galahs as they're meant to be quieter than any other type of cockatoo while also having quite a cuddly disposition.

Was wondering if anyone with any of these birds could tell me what it is like to live with them and whether my beliefs about them are true.

I'm looking for a biggish bird with a fair life span (40 years) and a fairly friendly disposition. I also would like the bird to be quiet in the way that Senegals are quiet- They only make noise for the morning, evening and when they're unhappy or want something, I don't really want a bird that makes noise continuously/ just for the hell of it- (e.g.- I'm not keen on keeping Budgies because although their voices are quiet, they don't seem to stop chattering) I'd rather have something that for 5 minutes 5 times a day screamed, rather than something which chattered on all day long...

Anyone any ideas?

well quieter big birds are timneh, cape, pios(the bigger ones are similarly sized to a timneh so if timneh is on the list then so should be a pio). Galah is quieter cockatoo but thats all relative.. its most likely going to be much louder then any other on the list. red lored and white fronted, and lilac crowned amazons are also quit (rarely talks). eclectus can also be a possibility. so ya do your research into specifics.

also to clarify, none of these birds i listed (or you listed) will be anywhere near as quiet as a senegal. so you have to make a sacrifice on that front.

This information on amazons is incorrect. Amazons are generally known to be loud, but it varies with individuals more than species even if some vague generalisations can be made. Generally white fronts are known to be one of the louder types of amazons, but that will vary with individuals.

Stitch, our white front is not a screamer, but talks A LOT, he loves talking and rarely screams. I should also say that he doesnt do any white front amazon noises anymore, his and Leroy's noises have merged into "pionusamazon" sounds, something inbetween the two species regular noises.
But most of the time Stitch actually talks rather than make any bird noises.

Tbh, our WFA is alot quieter than the Meyers we were looking at when first looking into buying a bird. Poi's have rather high pitched chirping. But again, this will probably be down to the individual bird. Just saying that even though generalisations can be made, its not a fact. Poi's can make a lot of sound as well, and like other birds develop into screamers.

Also, if you want a bigger bird, whitefronts are actually quite small. Yes, they are alot bigger than senegals, but I would say they are medium sized rather than classed as big.

Jayde has been here for awhile so I assumed he knew that everything I was saying is just generalization and that it ultimately comes down to the individual bird. Interesting your white front can talk. Is the voice clear? Would love to see a video if you have.

Also to add, generally amazons are loud but the white front and red lored are generally much quieter sort of like how green cheek conures are quieter conures. Also in general they are poor talkers.

No and yes. You are correct that they generally are poor talkers, but White fronted amazons are known to be one of the noisest amazon species there is.

I have no idea how red lored are.

A little OT, but sure :).
For his talking, I only have an old video of Stitch talking in the shower:

and a very short one of peekaboo:

The first was from when he started, its a bit clearer now and he knows more phrases.
