lesser sulpher crested cockatoos

Postby pennyandrocky » Tue Jun 11, 2013 12:19 pm

i have been asked to foster a bonded pair of :cockatoo: s for a rescue. the female doesn't like to be touched but the male does. they have to be supervised while out since like other male toos he gets rough with his mate. they are not allowed to breed with eachother anymore but cannot be seperated since they've been together 28 years. it hasn't been decided yet i have to talk to my family and then meet them to see if they like me. i'm just trying to get more informed before i decide.

Actually, it's not true that too males get rough with their mates. They only do it in captivity so it's something we do or don't do that causes it. I am curious though... how are you planning on preventing them from having sex? I had a bonded pair of U2s and they had sex right in front of me all the time during breeding season and, personally, I would not dream of interfering when they are smack in the middle of things.

the rescue told me they only attempt to mate when in a cage together. they now sleep in seperate cages and are fine when they are out. she gave me a female ducorps 2 years ago and i had to sign a contract that i would not breed her so i doubt she would risk him breeding with either female. this is going to be a temporary home for them until someone is found to adopt them both. sorry i meant to say some male cockatoos were rough with their mates.

Well, housing a bonded pair separately seems hugely cruel to me... What is the name of this rescue?

they are in seperate cages because he hurts her if they are allowed to sleep in the same cage they are out together all day what's cruel about that?

They are a bonded pair and he hurts her only at night? Doesn't that sound kind of implausible to you? I have lots of bonded pairs and all they do at night is sleep next to each other - they might bicker during the day -usually over food that the hen tries to take out of the male's beak and ten only a pair of amazons do this, the rest never even bicker...

that's what she said i don't see any reason she would lie to me about that. she's not looking for money she wanted me to take them as fosters. she is very careful about where she places all her birds but especially cockatoos. i don't see any point in her giving me false information when she wants them to have the best life possible.

sounds like these parrots need a massive outdoor aviary about 3 m long. if you sign a contract that you would not breed them how would they know if you let them? are they currntly sharing a cage or an aviary?

she only adopts out locally so she can keep track of them. i'm not taking the pair now though an emegancy placement is needed for a citron :cockatoo: . she's a plucker and since i've made alot of progress with mya's :corella: plucking she feels our home will be a good place for her. she's bringing her to my house in 2 weeks. the two up for adoption do not share a cage they do get to be together all day they just can't be closed in a cage together.

No, I am not saying she is lying -maybe she is just repeating what the original owners told her- but it still sounds unlikely to me...
