I need some advies

Postby bosad44 » Tue Jun 11, 2013 10:38 pm

so after all the time of researching and dreaming I finally decided to get a CAG it's been my dream since I was 9 years old (now I'm 17) and I think I'm quite ready to own one now and I had some previous experiences with few birds when I was younger and I owned a cockatiel last year and it was really good and I trained him well but sadly someday when I painted my room and there was men working I had to move the cage away in the living room and some how I forgot to close the cage and went outside. when I went outside I came back to find my brother left the door open and I looked everywhere to try to find luffy but couldn't find him any where :( I looked for days and nothing I tried almost everything I could do but no use :( and I really miss him now and I miss having a partner with me. so I've decided to move on and think about making the next step and buy me a :gray: .so any advises, tips, suggestions, or opinions would be appreciated :)

thanks in advance.

What makes you think the same problem wouldn't happen again? Until you're living in your own home and have complete control of the bird's environment, it's not a good idea to get a parrot for the very reason of what happened to you (and many other similar unfortunate cases). Do the responsible thing and wait until you have your own life sorted out before doing something that affects another.

because somewhat you can say I have more control of this thing now. and I thought a lot about it and asked this question to myself. in any case we moved and things are a so much different now. and I'm sure that I'm not going to make this mistake again. but if you think otherwise please share your thoughts and thanks :)

My dear, please don't take this the wrong way because I don't mean to make you feel bad or anything but you are way too young to make a commitment that will need to last 50 to 60 years. Your life hasn't started yet and there will be soooooo many HUGE changes in your life before you are completely settled down...(college, job, marriage, kids, etc). Parrots are not like dogs or cats. They are very labor-intensive, hugely expensive to buy AND to keep and require stability, maturity, schedules, routines and almost constant companionship. Rehoming them is an option but not one that one should contemplate before one acquires the bird and, in your case, it would be inevitable because life will happen and you won't be able to be there for him the way he will need you to be. And grays are one of the worst species when it comes to change... Please reconsider. Don't think of what you want, think of what you can offer the bird which, at this point in your life, is not what he will need for the next 50 years.

I have considered all of this. I understand what you're trying to do and I appreciate it but I have all this solved and planned out I would of have choose to get one if I didn't think I'm ready. as for the college and money I already got all these solved I pretty much got enough money for everything that my parrot gonna need and for college it's gonna be in the same city and I won't be moving out after I finish school I know that I'm still young. but I think it's the right time for me I've considered everything and done researches for years. I know you guys are trying to stop me from doing something that might be wrong or bad but trust me I'm sure that I'm ready. but you might be right after all but now I'm pretty convinced that I can take this responsibility. what happened with my previous bird might make you think otherwise but it's been along time since then and I really took a good care of luffy everything was perfectly fine expect for that one day when I made that mistake and everybody makes mistake right? nobody is perfect. and I'm not the type of person who would do the same mistake twice. like I won't be putting the bird in the living room and even if I had to the doors are different here. and even if I waited till I'm older it would make no difference cause changes happens to everyone's life. and for me everything is sorted out and I won't be moving out or anything for college I'm pretty much staying in the same house till I finish college and maybe even longer. I live in a small country and things here are different. but if you really think that I shouldn't take this step then please convince me to not to.. and thanks a lot I appreciate it. :)

I only came here to have some opinions and advises before making this step of buying a CAG. and I started making researches knowing that I can make the commitment. I already considered that it will be a life time commitment and I'll be spending my whole life taking care of that bird and I have no problem with it knowing that I have considered everything that could happen to my life and changes that could happen to me with time. and nothing would happen that would effect anything for the bird.

Do you even realize how much a CAG costs to have?

sure. I told you I did my researches and I considered everything and I have enough information and all about costs for the bird, cage, food, avian vet bills, and everything I had to consider. and I'm fully ready for anything about money and prices.

i mean.. mistakes happen. As long as you learned from the mistake and will be a lot more responsible now and with more control over your bird then go ahead. But only if you really thought it through. may i ask why you want a congo grey? Did you do research on other birds and is a congo really what you want?

lastly i am not a guy who advocates waiting since there will always be a reason why not to get a bird. but if i were to give you a little suggestion, it would be to wait till after 1 year of college. See how much time you really have for your bird. You might end up not having enough time to spend with him and a congo grey will need a lot of time . Also You might be busy with school, and i assume you will have a job. So ya think it through and see if you can just research on other birds meanwhile instead. I think waiting for 1 year of college first and then buying would be better since you will have a lot of new info on how busy you will really be.
