Senegal and baby Cockatiel

Postby Conure Mom » Thu Jun 13, 2013 5:48 pm

So, I finally got my new Senegal, Samson. He's a 10 yr old male who came from a great home who's circumstances had changed and they believed he would be better off with someone else. I'll not comment on that part, but I'm happy to have him. :) Samson is out of his cage most of the day, playing on the play-gym with most of the other birds. They are 100% under observation the whole time, and if they wont be, Samson accompanies the last person to leave the room. He's never left unattended unless everyone is securely caged.

At the same time, my pair of cockatiels hatched some chicks and they had aged to the point where I was handfeeding them. Things have progressed to the point that now, the babies are coming out of their cage learning how to fly! It's great fun watching them, but today one of them happened to land on the same perch that Samson was on. Uh oh... I couldn't get to them fast enough. I saw Samson moving towards my baby with his beak wide open and my heart dropped - I knew it would happen before I could do anything about it. I was a step away when it happened....

He fed the baby. Yes - my big, rough, tough, aggressive Senegal recognized a baby of a totally different species and determined to take care of it. <3 Isn't that the sweetest thing you've ever heard? Rest assured, I still scooped the baby up and away the moment I was in reach, and yes, I praised both of them for using their good manners, but it was certainly a heart stopping moment for me! I'll be more wary of that happening again in the future!

Anyway, I just thought I'd share!
