Indian Ringneck - Bluffing

Postby InTheAir » Sat Jun 22, 2013 4:13 am

Hey guys,

I am interested in whether there is a link between the severity of the 'bluffing stage' and clipping pet irns.

Our 10 month old, always flighted, dna sexed male hasn't had a noticeable bluffing stage. I know of other flighted irns that have also been the same.

If you don't mind answering a few questions, I'd really appreciate it.

1) Has your bird been clipped?
2) Has your bird been through 'bluffing' with you? If yes, how long did it last?
3) Male or female?
4) Age?
5) Parent raised or hand raised?
Anything else you'd like to add...

Thanks in advance!

hi there my bird did go through a bluffing stage at about two and a half months for roughly 3 weeks shes a female hand raised indian ringneck between 5 to six yers old i had her from about two and alf months of age and bought her from my friend because she was being fed badly while still a baby, due to my friend having been given inadiquate advice in the pert shop that she was sold from.

i find she can be quite moody and it is often due to the season but but she is also affectionate and interactive. are you having any specific problems with your birds bluffing ?

maybe i could help?

Thanks for the reply. Was your bird clipped at that stage or flighted?

We don't have a problem with our bird. He is possibly one of the most laidback ringnecks ever. You can get bitten by him, but you really have to do something stupid persistently to provoke him.

The purpose of this post is purely to survey people who have ringnecks as to whether their bird had a bluffing stage and whether the bird was clipped at the time.

Most of the ringnecks I have heard of that have a big bluffing stage are clipped, which is why I'm curious about it.

I am not counting mature female behaviour hormonal behaviour in this, as that is a completely different kettle of fish and has different triggers.

hi there
my ringneck has never been clipped at any stage in her life she can fly well but enyoys to flap her wings while stationary to stregnthen her mustles webween flights across the room.

she rides around on the back of my wheelchair to be near to me. i think aggression can be conected to wing clipping because their could be more situations where a bird could not flee when started provocing an aggressive response that maybe otherwise would not be there.

she likes to test what she can get away with but was musch more prone to biting while the adult black tip of her beak was growing in, i think it was also maybe her hormones its hard to know.

she is sensitive to suger so i feed her on harrisons as a base diet she wony eat cooked carrots but will eat sweet cooked potatoes cooked and carrots raw. she likes both steamed an cooked brocoli and sprouted chick peas, mung, and azucki beens but does not like sprouted lentils which i think is a bit weird.

she can be abit pickier if foods are wet with water or cold from the frige and she is moodier with non organic food which is understandible.

i also think consisancy is important in traing with ringnecks so they become used to a routine and what his expected from them as well as what is bad behoviour i do positive reinfiorcement training which works really well with her and shes highly food motivated, loves pop corn chillis and coconut. i train her using a glove because i cannot use both my hands but used to handle her bear handed until her beak grew its black tip i still give her a head rub through the cage bars bere handed ;)
