HELP! My Cockatiel is stuck in a 70ft tree!

Postby angellynn2009 » Fri Jul 19, 2013 7:09 am

I've been with my boyfriend for over a year now and his cockatiel, Cramer, somehow escaped his cage and flew into a 70ft tree on the outline of our very dense woods. The previous owner that had him, always had him in a cage outside on the porch so my boyfriend and his family would always hang the cage up outside (weather permitting and only during the day). Somehow, the door wasn't locked properly or he found his way out but he is now stuck in the tree and won't come down. We live in a extremely rural area, it takes five minutes to get to the end of our own driveway. Last night, my boyfriend went out to try to coax him down but a storm came rolling in and we had no choice but to head in. Early this morning, I went back out and I could hear him chirping but he still isn't coming down and sounds distressed. I am having a hard time getting him over his fear and I have brought the cage out to him. I have placed crackers on the inside and even one on the top. He's bonded with my boyfriend, and with him at work it is hard. As he drove away this morning, I could hear Cramer's distressed calls (he knows our vehicles). Being in such a rural area, we are worried about owls and hawks lurking in the area. What can we do? I need help!!

Leave the cage where it usually is or in plain sight of where he is now but at such an angle that he could fly down to it. In other words not straight below. Leave the door open with food inside. Possibly find some cockatiel recordings on youtube and play them loudly near the cage. The rest is luck unfortunately. Gotta train and protect the birds preemptively.

If all else fails, can you call the fire department? There's stories of firemen rescuing cats from trees... maybe they could help? Wouldn't hurt to try.

Yeah, I'm sure the fire department won't mind helping. Volunteer FDs are often staffed by kind people.

FYI - You should also do whatever you think is necessary about hawks and other raptors. I too live in a rural area and there's lots of red tails out here. As much as I love and admire them, they wouldn't get a hold of any bird of mine.

The same happened to me in Southern California with a flight blue front Amazon that I had for over 50 years. A few days later, some boys came to my house with the Amazon on a stick. So I guess they will eventually fly down but maybe someone will keep your bird and take it to another city. Good Luck.

I have no idea as to how this ended as it happened almost 2 years ago and before I came onto this forum. I would hate to go through all of the topics and try to list all of the ones that are still unresolved due to the OP never coming back to let anyone know. It would be almost as bad as listing the ones that the OP made only one post and never posted again.

EDIT

I took the liberty and looked this member up and this was their first and only post ever.
