What aratinga species is good for a beginner?

Postby Ammon » Sun Aug 11, 2013 4:29 am

I want get a pet parrot and did read into the topic recently and i like Aratinga species the most (like red masked parakeet and sun paarkeet). My question is what species would you say are best for a beginner? I really like the red masked parakeet and the scarlet-fronted parakeet. Are they easy to be trained? I´m really a beginner and my parents only owned a pair of canary birds so i would be happy if i could get some information.

Yes, they are both trainable although they both require high levels of enrichment (very large flight cages, daily interaction and training, 3 hours of one-on-one time) and they both have a high pitched scream but the sun conure is the worst.

Personally, for a beginner, I would suggest a Green Cheeked or a Nanday (much calmer birds).

They are adorable. Very affectionate but, at the same time, big clown personality in them. And I don't know about the females but the males talk -at least, both of mine do while the females don't. One of them says: Hi, Leo. Stop it! Kisses. Nite-nite. Bye-Bye. I love you! and tells the dogs to shut up -LOL

First off, do you live in a house or apartment? If you said apartment, do not get a sun conure! Please! Your neighbors will complain and so will you. They are absurdly loud for such little birds.
Again, I'm going to recommend a cockatiel even though it is not aratinga. They are quiet(not too loud), mostly cuddly, cannot bite hard, very intelligent, and good beginner birds. In the aratinga family, I'd say a green cheek conure. They're sweet birds. But again...pleasepleaseplease look into cockatiels!
