new parrot advise

Postby SwirlyWorld » Fri Aug 16, 2013 11:18 am

Hello,
im new to this forum, i just discovered this forum while i was researching about parrots and realized how informational this place is. :D

I was drawn to parrots when i had to babysit an African grey for 2 weeks for a friend who left for vacation. So I've been planning to get a new bird that is good for a beginner in larger parrots. I wont be getting one soon, maybe in the spring or late winter. I have four budgies that all are flight recall trained but i only got one semi potty trained. :( This is a big thing, i need a bird that can be potty trained or at least i can teach it where not to go potty. After doing hours of research, I've narrowed it down to the senegal and GCC. I haven't found a really big difference in either one yet, cant decide which one. :/ i also wanted to confirm if the info i have right now is correct.
-good cage size for both is 24"W 24"L and 38".
-both considered "quiet"
-both aren't great talkers.
-GCC are more destructive
-GCC are very cuddly
-senegals are more independent
-senegals are more pron to one-person birds

I've been wondering if there is a really bid size difference, i know that both are pretty small, but on average, is one bigger then the other? Which bird has a higher pitched scream? There will be times where ill be away for 12+ hours (rare times), which bird can entertain them self for longer periods of time. And yeah ill provide many many toys. :) Another thing is which one is more nippy, I've read a lot about nippy GCC but not much about senegals. How bad is the hormonal time for each bird? And how long does it last? I found a good cage, but us 2cm bar spacing OK for either birds? Is there another species you recommend for a beginner?

I will hear out all your suggestions. Thank you! :D
This is where i pretend i have a awesome sig.

Hello,

Welcome to the forums!
24"W 24"L and 38"

Thats a small cage, go BIGGER!
his is a big thing, i need a bird that can be potty trained or at least i can teach it where not to go potty.

Dont count on it, some birds learn this, but most do not. Even with a potty trained bird, there will be a lot of accidents.

Keep researching, give it at least a couple of months thought, rather than hours ;)!

-both aren't great talkers.

-Hmm. Well, its all relative I guess, but no bird is quiet.
-Correct, but some learn to talk a little.
-GCC are more destructive
-GCC are very cuddly
-senegals are more independent

Seems to me that you are leaning towards a GCC? :P
It usually comes down to the individual parrot.
Another thing is which one is more nippy, I've read a lot about nippy GCC but not much about senegals.
Both will bite, GCCs have a nippy period which if handled badly can escalate into a big problem. Senegals are sometimes very aggressive.
Which bird has a higher pitched scream?
Both!
There will be times where ill be away for 12+ hours (rare times), which bird can entertain them self for longer periods of time.
Niether of the birds will cope with being alone too much.

Well from what I heard, gCC are cuddly but they are smaller birds so they are always on the move. Also since they are smaller they probably poop more often. However sennie's poops are bigger. Cage size IMO depends on how much they will be out of cage. If they will be out only few hours day then go bigger. If they will be out most of day then that's fine.

This is my sennie's. he is always down for long cuddles on his time which is most of the times.

She said she was sometimes out 12 hours, and im guessing she's working as well which means the bird will be cage bound quite a bit. Such a small cage wont be appropriate then ;).

damn then definitely bigger cage.

also inside the cage make sure to have tons of toys/swings/boings/foraging toys etc.. they need activities inside the cage so they dont get bored. boredness turns into problems later on.

Thx for the quick replies :)

@cml ok ill look for a bigger cage, about what size do you think is appropriate for my situation. There was a cage with 32"/19"/39", would that by ok? I saw many larger cages but the bar spacing was all 1". Some days meetings are far away and take time, but my grandmother will always be home to let the bird out on the play gym.

@Nir wow cute sennie. :D yeah i don't really mind too much poop, i had to deal with an African grey's poop for a week. Unless a sennie's poop is larger then a grey's, it wont affect me.

Appreciated the tips
