My parrot is afraid of wood :/

Postby Msaad » Fri Aug 16, 2013 2:50 pm

I just made for my parrot some new wooden perches, but my parrot is afraid of wood (dunno why :/ ), even that he don't enter his new bigger cage bcz of it wooden perches, plz help, he just fly away when i hold them, his favorite treats are corn buffed chips (peanut flavor) i can make him follow me using those chips, but never approach to the perches even if its decorated with those treats. Plz help :s :gray:

P.S: he love to kiss me when i approach, he is kind of clicker trained, but refuse to let me touch him to make him step up or any kind of this, he turn suddenly aggressive, and start bitting and he start refusing every kind of treats and toys, he just grab them and throw them away :/

The idea is that he is always out of his cage, he always wanna play, he sleep near my bed, sometimes go to his cage to eat and drink only, but why wood? Isn't he supposed to like wood like in the wild? His last owner teached him by making him starve, its the commoun way here in lebanon (arabs and their ways to train :s) any way it used to work with him but i hate this way, i brought him parrots food (its a mix) he started to take out the corn ( i think it's his favourit) than he chosed the sun flower seeds, than stoped to eat, never touch the other elements. When i clicker trained him, he refuse the corn, and start to look at my chips bag, so his treats are chips. Back to the idea that in my home, he is afraid of wood, this are some pics of the perches and for us.

.....Are you sure he's actually afraid of wood? Sounds to me like he's just not used to the perches, they're new to him, unfamiliar and weird-looking - takes some time getting used to. :)

Oh, and you shouldn't feed him chips, not even as treats. That's bad for him.

try some more natural shaped wood perches like java. the round perches aren't really good for their feet they need different sizes. I use concrete perches to keep my birds nails trimmed and they scrape their beaks on them too. they also have java perches and a tree that I made from trees I cut down from my yard. he should also be on a pellet diet with fresh fruits and veggies daily the sunflower seeds are as bad as potato chips they should only be used for treats/training.

In here (lebanon), sunflower seeds are the only parrot food, i buy some food mixes for the hight class stores as big malls, they are sold only their, its not expenseve, but not everyone buy them, also about the chips, its the only treat he love, he chosed at first the corn seeds from the mix, but he just cut them in the half and trow them. About the perche, i guess you're right so i'm thinking of make them in a diferent shape, thanks anw. :)

I am assuming a lot of things here so I might have some of it wrong but I would like to make some points about improving things for your bird.

Those dowell perches are highly unsuitable for parrots feet and will cause foot problems sooner or later, natural perches from parrot safe trees are best. You can find a list of safe trees online.

Are you keeping the bird in one of the two cages shown? If so you need a much much bigger cage as soon as possible, they are far too small.

Also please don't kiss your bird like that or feed from your mouth, for your safety and more importantly the birds safety. Our saliva contains bacteria that can make a bird very sick which may lead to death. This is something you may get away with for a while but it really isn't worth the risk.

Well, if he only goes into his cage to eat and/or sleep, the size is not that important but you have to make a place for him where he would be comfortable. Use tree branches (make sure the wood is safe for him to chew on -not toxic- and that the trees have not been sprayed with chemicals. Don't make the branches into perches, use them as they are (crooked and with little branches coming off the larger ones) like this: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Par ... ORM=IQFRBA but you don't have to make a stand, you can simply attach them to the outside of the cage with rope (he will chew the rope so make sure it has not been treated with anything, too). You can also hang rope with knots from the ceiling so he can climb up and down. He needs more entertainment than just a square cage with a round dowel in it. To get him used to the wood, just leave the branches laying around not too near him and put them closer and closer to him when he doesn't show any fear of them until you can attach them to the cage or make them into a stand.

As to food, yes, it's hard to find good bird food in countries like yours (I come from South America so I know) but you can improvise. See if you can get wheat, barley, millet, sorghum, oats and brown rice in the market. If you can't, see if you can contact a mill (where they grind the grains into flour) or farmers that grow the crops. Cook them until they are softer but not completely soft (the grains should remain whole and a bit hard -that's they way they like it best) and mix them with cooked lentils, beans and lots of vegetables like carrots in small pieces, corn, peas (if you can find any), green beans, cooked sweet potato (very important for the vitamin A which they need), broccoli (or some other green you can cook like kale or chard (but try not to use too much spinach), peppers of any kind, squash or pumpkin, etc.

Lebanese cuisine has bulgur (which is cracked wheat), lentils, peppers, garbanzo beans, chard, flat green beans and I've seen recipes with sweet potatoes, white potatoes, garlic, cauliflower, squash, tomatoes, cabbage, etc. all things you can use. You also use a lot of eggplant but I don't feed it to my birds so I don't know if you should. Ahhh, and no onions, coffee, tea (unless it's herbal), anything with alcohol, avocados, chocolate, fried food, meat or any other animal product, salt, sugar. Basically, when in doubt, don't feed it.

You also have figs and dates which my birds love and are very nutritious. Oh, and walnuts and almonds, you have those, too!

See if you can find a seed mix for smaller birds (like canaries) and mix it with the sunflowers (too many sunflowers is VERY bad for their liver), if you can't, see if you can find some canary seed, millet, safflower, sorghum, quinoa (I saw a recipe that uses it so it must be available somewhere).

If nothing else, give him a piece of multigrain flat bread, it's better than sunflowers.

And don't allow him to get into your mouth, humans have bacteria that is only for humans, not birds and they get sick from it.
