Senegal or blue crown??

Postby Sasha2 » Tue Aug 27, 2013 7:33 am

Next year Im adding to my flock. I know I dont want a huge bird.
I am leaning toward either a Senegal or a Blue crown conure.
I see quite a few Senegals on craigslist around here, which worries me.But then I got both my current conures off CL and couldnt be happier.
Ive never seen a Blue crown breeder nhere at all so may not be able to get one if I wanted too. Or if I do I may have to travel.

So that all being said.I want a baby so I can harness train it and take it out. I want a fairly brave bird, one that can be my best pal and go with me everywhere. But not so clingy they cant play on a playstand or in their cage. I do want a smarty pants though.
Please dont think Im that Im expecting too much, just this will be my very last bird so I want to be a bit picky. I know parrots are all different.
Noise isnt a problem as our sun conure doesnt bother me.
I dont need a talker but a few words is always cool.
I dont mind Sassy but not aggressive.
I dont need cuddly but an occasional snuggle is nice.
So if anyone can offer any opinions here it would be welcome.

Doesn't have to be a baby to be harness trained. I've worked with older rescue parrots and they can learn it just the same. Granted you can just stick it on a baby but need to work with an older bird, when the baby gets older you'll have to do the same anyway!

Given your existing flock and tolerance of noise (blue crowned is probably quieter than sun anyway) I'd say definitely stick to another conure. A Senegal won't fit the flock well. It will be aggressive toward the other birds and toward you. They don't like other birds and can get very jealous. A Senegal could hurt or kill your other birds while a Conure might even enjoy their company.

just has to second michael with the harness training, definitly does not have to be a baby both my brownheaded parrots were adults (well 6 and 7 years old) and one of them comes flying as soon as I bring the harness out, this was a rehome due to biting, and thats basically all gone as well, and he truly enjoys the harness, so he is in it and outside almost daily. the girl hasn't been here for as long and is also a rehome due to biting, she still presents some of her biting tendencys some days but on the days when she wants to come out for cuddles etcetera she is usually just fine with the harness as well. but other days she is back to chasing any patch of bare skin and I wouldn't even consider taking the harness out. these days are quite few nowdays though.

Anyways what I wanna say is don't skip the harness on your existing birds, begin training with them to wear a harness before deciding you need to train a baby bird to wear one instead (nothing really says this new bird will accept the harness any better than the adult).

Okay thanks, I do like the idea of a blue crown too , just thought Id check into the Senegals since they seem to be prevalent in our area..I will just have to really search to get one when the time comes.

As for harness training Ive not had much luck.Ive tried two different harness for my GCC.The first sent her into a hormonal fit because it irritated her vent. The second she just plain hates.I made the mistake of buying it in red, her very worst color(derp)..I think Ive lost the harness at this point. I dont know that im a very good trainer.
My sun is relatively new, weve had him 5 mnths. But he is older and very very timid. He gets spooked very easily and rarely even comes out of the cage for more then 10 min.He is very sweet though and doesnt have an aggressive bone in his body.
