hello from a new member-need advise on mcCaw eye disorder

Postby gbernal » Mon Sep 02, 2013 8:07 pm

Hello forum,

It was a nice holiday weekend until the last 3 hours where my Severe McCaw ,Yoshi suddenly has red swollen eyes with no other symptoms. It started after being outside mid-morning, nothing unusual, no contact with bugs/botanicals, strange or different foods or environment.

Her eye socket area is ringed reddish / purplish all around both eyes.
No mucous, discharge or other symptoms. Seems to be in normal spirits but eyes have me worried with such sudden onset. Any words of wisdom or actions I could take to help her?
do birds get allergic reactions to possible something in the air?

Thought I would try the expertise of your forum and other bird lovers/owners for help.
Thanks in advance.

She needs to be checked by an avian vet. It sounds like an infection.

Well, that's a tough one... For one thing, it's not really known if parrots have allergies (two AVs I've had admitted to me that they tell people the bird has allergies as a default diagnosis when they don't know what's causing the problem). For another, birds don't usually get eye infections per se. Not that they cannot get them because they can (scratching too hard with a dirty claw would do it) but, usually, when both eyes are swollen or infected is because of an upper respiratory infection that has spread to the eyes. Please take the bird to an AV as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can make a strong tea with regular black tea and chamomile (put a tea bag and two teaspoons of chamomile in a cup and pour water that has boiled but has been allowed to cool a bit -you don't want to burn the herbs- and let it steep until it's cool) and clean his eyes with cotton balls drenched in it (make it so the cotton balls are actually dripping a bit). Use different cotton balls for each eye and keep the tea in the fridge covered tightly with plastic wrap.
