Parrotlets eggs hatched but need advice?

Postby dcranson » Mon Oct 28, 2013 11:05 am

Hiya
I have 2 pocket parrots who are 3. The female has laid 3 clutches of eggs this year but she didn't sit on them or take any notice of them. Her fourth clutch of eggs, she has sat on them for nealy 3 weeks and the eggs have started hatching. 1 is quite lively but the 2nd egg that hatched either last night of early this morning, the little one looks like it isn't breathing. But the female is cuddling up to it. I'm really worried it might of died. It was lively this morning and the male was feeding it but I don't know what to do. It's my first time with a clutch of eggs. Any advice would be helpful! I don't want to keep checking on the eggs as I've been told let nature take it's course. Help? :hatching:

There is nothing you can do but wait and see. If it's healthy, the parents will feed/warm it and it will survive. If it's not, they won't feed it and could even throw it out of the nest. I've kept rejected babies alive by handfeeding but, with the exception of one canary, they all ended up having serious health issues and dying. The canary survived but doesn't sing although it is a male. Nature knows best.

You do know you have to provide the parents with special food (three types of 'soft' changed twice daily) as well as liquid calcium, right?
