Thinking to own a small poicephalus

Postby Rosa_ » Wed Nov 06, 2013 9:02 am

Hello,

I'm thinking to own a meyers or a senegal parrot.
My situation now: I live with my parents in a flat (we have no neighbors next to our flat or above) with 3 dogs that make some noisy sometimes. But the possible problem is my father, I owned 2 budgies some years ago and he hates the chatting and screaming of budgies. Are meyers or senegals less loud than budgies?? And are females less loud than males?
Other problem: my father loves watch tv with high volume. Could these parrots take bad habits?
Could you give me your opinion?
Thanks!
(I'm Spanish, sorry if I wrote something wrong ;) )

Hello Rosa_!

I can tell you that my Meyer's hen shrieks louder than the budgies I had, but she mostly does it when her cage is uncovered and I am out of sight. My budgies were more of a constant background chattering noise. Meyer's are considered "quiet" birds because you can't hear them well from a distance, but they do whistle and make contact calls. Still, my dog is louder when someone comes to the door.

Parrots need 12+ hours of sleep a night, so when it gets late I roll her cage to a quiet room for the night, where she can't hear the TV. Loud is OK as long as the parrot can get enough sleep.

I don't know much about Senegal noise levels, but there are lots of Senegal fans here that can help you with that.

About TV and dogs, I wanted to say if they can learn to scream because of the loud volume...(my father is retired and watches tv many hours a day).
I don't know, maybe Bourke parakeets would be a better choice.
Thanks for your information Harpmaker!

Yes, they will scream louder than the TV. It's programmed into their brain because they live in large flocks where lots of individual birds scream loudly at the same time.

I would seek out a quiet bird as a rehome or through a rescue. If you get a baby bird, he or she will likely go through the bratty and noisy puberty years that you'll have to deal with. If your dad cannot tolerate lots of noise, it's a bad idea to get a baby as the days of noise and rebellion are pretty inevitable. If you go trough a rescue or adopt an older bird, you will be able to choose a bird based on his true personality. Especially if you go with a rescue, they will try to pair you with a bird you're looking for, which is a quiet one. That being said- Pois are pretty quiet in general, they're not as incessant as budgies. Pionus is another option you could consider. All in all, your best bet to find an adult whose personality is predictable and known.

Glassonion, parrots are not very popular pets in Spain yet, and peolpe usually has bugdies, cockatiels, lovebirds, CAGs,... I only know about one parrot rescue in Spain ,and they don't give the birds to anybody! It's a foundation for people who can't take care for their birds any more...
Thanks for your advice!!

To be perfectly honest I would completely rethink the idea of having a bird if your family got annoyed at a budgie noise level. Budgies have quiet voices but they do use them a lot, on the whole I would describe a budgie as background noise, like having the radio on quietly whilst your doing other stuff.

With the species you mention they may well make less noise overall throughout the day if your talking about the supposed average bird of those species but the volume is a lot louder when they do vocalise and of course some birds vocalise a lot more frequently than others of the same species (IMO I would rather have the lower volume bird that talks more than the one that talks less but much louder- though tbh I don't really care about noise levels).

Too many people have rehomed birds because they were noisier than expected or noisier than what is considered normal for that species which isn't fair on the birds themselves, please think carefully and make sure all members of your family are 100% on board before going ahead with this.

Sennies and Meyers can be loud when they want to, but they aren't as noisy as the Sun conure or bigger birds like Amazons. Meyers and Sennies are louder than budgies.
