Bird Fancier's Lung in Macaws?

Postby KC Cameron » Mon Dec 02, 2013 6:45 pm

A local avian vet assistant told me that Macaws, when housed in the same area as 2s, can get Bird Fancier's Lung (Bird Breeder's Disease). Hase anyone heard of this happening to a Macaw?

My U2 and GW have been side by side for 13 years with no problem, but I am not sure if this is something I should be concerned about.

Yes, I have. Good rescues usually have them in separate rooms precisely because of that problem. All birds are susceptible to the 'dusty' birds dander but, apparently, it's worse for macaws.

Why not invest in an air purifier? That will help the indoor air quality!

And a humidifier because the moisture makes the dust heavier so there is less 'floating' around.

Better late than never. Besides, that's what parrot keeping is all about: constantly learning, constantly tweaking, constantly improving.
