how should I set up my Caiques cage?

Postby Graeme » Tue Dec 03, 2013 10:30 pm

Hopefully our new baby Caique should be coming home this weekend, but I need to sort out his cage first.
I have various types of toys and perches, I also have a little hut for him. But I am not sure how to set everything up.

Should I keep things low and near the bottom of the cage until he gets used to things or should I just set it up like I would for a n adult bird?

At the moment I have it set up with the hut at the top and towards the back of the cage. This has a perch at the front of the hut, there are a total of 6 perches that are different textures and size,s placed around the cage as well as two rope perches. There is also a swing as well as various hanging toys and some foot toys on the bottom.

The cage is approx 34" wide, 22" deep and 60" high.

They are great climbers (even when very young). I would just make sure that you have a perch located close to the hut opening so that the baby can easily climb from the perch to the inside of the hut. I couldn't tell if a perch was close to the opening or not from the picture. Once mine decided to try the hut out, as soon as the lights go out, he's in there until the lights are turned on in the morning.

It looks like you created a great cage and play stand for him. They are a true joy to be around. I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks, I will just leave it as it is then. I have a perch close to the hut.

I am also going to make some perches out of Bottle Brush Tree, I have read that it is safe for birds and we have plenty of them growing on our property.

I am wondering if I should leave the bark on, my thinking is it will give them something to nibble at. I will be soaking them in a mix of water and vinegar as well as putting them in either the oven or microwave for awhile to kill off anything that is left.

Actually, I would suggest you add quite a few wooden perches, the setup looks great :), but it looks to be lacking natural perches! They are very important so your new caique can keep his beak and claws in better shape!
