Meyers v. Brown Headed?

Postby r3dra1n » Tue Dec 10, 2013 4:02 pm

I apologize if this has come up before but I didn't find it in a search. Debating Meyer's and Brown Headed Pois. I know it comes down to the individual but can anyone confirm at least my search results?

Brown-headed= most gentle of the Poi's although some can get very attached to one person and defend territory? Can be very fearful and phobic...

Meyers- can be great family pets and socialize with many people but can be nippy and aggressive if it suits them...

I am looking into both at the moment. Everytime I think I have my mind made up, I see something that makes me doubt myself. They both sound lovely but some opinions out there are very strong one way or another!

Also, when males are described as the feistier of the two--what are we talking here? Would a pubescent male bite the crap out of everyone/anyone? If so, what percentage of the time would it do this? Also, what percentage of the time would a female do this? I've been bitten and struggled with bird personality issues before but nothing that is as scary as some people have made it out to be! Any input is extremely valuable. Much appreciated!

I dont have either, but my impression from reading A LOT of posts here are that most if not all pois exhibit those characteristics.

Depending on the species and which gender is the dominant one, you would have either males or females as 'more feisty'. In pois, the males are dominant so they are the 'feisty' ones (and yes, it's nothing but a euphemism for a bird that bites -LOL) but most of the problem with parrots' aggression comes from sexual frustration and, in a lesser degree, lack of proper handling so as long as you keep their endocrine system in tune with seasons so they don't produce sexual hormones all year round and they are handled correctly, you should not have a problem.

Thanks for the replies. Has anyone here struggled with this dilemma and come out on the other side with good results?

Thank you!!!

After speaking to a number of people with BHs and a few breeders, BHs and Meyer's are both similar, but BHs tend to be mellower, sweeter, less likely to be one person birds and better talkers. Though, everything comes down to the individual bird at the end of the day.

Thanks! I've heard the same but I keep seeing sneaking comments about BH's being very territorial or fearful as well. And on the flipside heard of Meyer's being more sociable. I'm sure either would be great and it highly depends on the individual but I"m a over-achiever when it comes to doing my research. I want to make a bird happy and have a mutually beneficial relationship! If a BH is more fearful, we have a lot of company and three dogs--I'd hate to torture the little guy. I'd also hate to torture our guests and dogs with a bird that's crazy territorial!

Thanks all.
