Considering buying a Sun Conure.

I grew up with many birds, but just recently adopted a female Senegal named Fiona. She is absolutely wonderful, and my family of 5 loves her so much. I recently saw that a Sun Conure needs a home in my area, and I have been very tempted. I know that that breed is very loud, but have not experienced it in person. We live in a condo, I have 3 young children, and have a Senegal. Would we be crazy to bring a Sun Conure into a condo with so much activity all the time?

I have found that my Sun Conure is not at all as noisy as I expected. He has his chirps and croaky sounds which he does most of the time. I can't exactly say I can compare him to other parrots because I haven't had any. He is however quieter than the Cockatiel I used to have.

He did used to scream when we left the room but was easily stopped by only entering when he had stopped screaming and giving him rewards, etc.

If anything the part that took me by surprise was how playful he was all the time!

All the ones I've known, had and still have (one sun conure as well as one Sunday -cross between sun conure and Jenday) are incredibly loud and seem to love to hear themselves screeching because they appear to do it for no other reason but there are exceptions to every rule so I guess it's a matter of seeing how this particular bird is.

Sun conures are really sweet birds and if you grew up in a home full of birds I feel you should be fine handling one as they aren't one of the most complicated ones. Suns are really pretty and have really exotic looks. They thrive on attention and they will need at least a 24X24X30 inch cage full of toys. The sun will need a lot of out side time 6-7 hours. You would be wise to get a cage with playtop. The expect atleast 1hour with you. They like to be rubbed on the head and vocalising. And I hope you aren't underestimating their loudness. My boy peanuts like many other suns loves to vocalize. 1 hour in the morning when I wake him up. 1 hour when my dad comes home. 5minutes every time someone rings the door bell and or comes near 10feet of his cage. Also the whole time guests are over. I live in a bricked house with thick walls and you can hear peanuts in my neighbhors lounge which is about 40 feet away from where peanuts is kept in my house. Peanuts literally gives peanuts headaches. He is that loud and his voice is very high pitched. Otherwise go for it

Well I was pleasantly surprised, before we got our Sun Conure (Bailey), I was led to believe they screamed bloody murder
With Bailey at least, that isn't the case at all, sure he does have his moments and it can be quite loud, but it isn't for long, it is only for 3 minutes at the most. But it is only when we have been out and come home, he is simply saying hello, it's about time you got back, he also does this first thing in the morning when he sees us, again, this is his greeting.

I really think it depends how you treat your bird, Bailey has the run of the house when we are home, he has lots of toys to play with including foraging toys. He also gets to spend a lot of quality time with us, either just chilling or playing and training.
He also gets "time outs" in his cage, but again, he has lots of toys to keep him occupied. He has a good mixed diet with various fruits and of course small treats throughout the day, all this goes toward keeping him happy and content.

But when they yell and they will yell it's LOUD!

In a condo, not a good idea, your neighbours are going to hate you...

Get a Green Cheek Conure, you'll maintain your sanity longer, LOL...

Short answer....yes.Unless you can have a trial period of a few weeks to see how he/she fares in your environment..Just my 2 cents.....

Sun Conures are, in my opinion, among the most beautiful of parrots. They are very sweet as well and I am also drawn to them. I hang out in a place that sells rehomes and baby birds and I feel like a jerk whenever I see people fawning over the Sun Conures and I inform them that they can be loud (I just hate seeing people get all "oooh beautiful sweet bird!" and then later dump them but I digress).

But yes, they do indeed have a rep for being LOUD, in general. Surely not all are as loud as others but this is the rep they have. But since you have a Sennie, be aware that Senegals can be MEGA jealous. My beloved Sennie would attack stuffed animals!
