Teaching Senegals Sounds?

Postby Kayleigh89 » Wed Jan 15, 2014 6:10 pm

I don't really expect my senegal to talk but, of all things to mimic he/she has picked the horrible squeak of a closet door. Is there a way to encourage other sounds?

What sound are trying to get your sennie to make? What ever it is, that is the sound he/she needs to hear repeatedly. Try to ignore the sounds you don't care for and show excitement and/or give a treat when he does something you like or want. I always talk to mine when I am with them. When Charley feels like it, she will say "pretty bird". When I respond she will repeat it a few more times.
As for the squeaky sound...WD-40 :)

I always talk to Oscar while doing things with him. He has picked up a lot since I got him. Repetition of desired word is obvious....but often they will pick up on things you never expect. I have a 3 year old whos name is Alex. She was getting into something she knows she shouldnt and I said "alex No!"....right after Oscar piped up "Alex no!"
Sometimes they will pick up on things....say it quite often and then not say it again. Oscar used to say "banana"....he wont now
It is also bird specific....some birds say very little or nothing at all.....others you cant shut up.
