Ciaque suddenly afraid

Postby Rosemary » Fri Feb 21, 2014 2:40 pm

Need some help. Two day after getting a short haircut took my ciaque out put him on his t stand. Turned my back he then jumped off running around floor screaming and flapping wings like some one was killing him. I had ahard time getting him he just kept running away from me screaming. I think I made a mistake by going after hin to pick him up. After finally getting him, he has been afraid of me especially my hands will throw himself on bottom of cage screaming. Left him alone for a couple days now, if I go slow I could scratch his head , I am giving his favorite treat walnuts,he will take them. What else can I do? Took him to vet for once over ,everything was fine. He will make these scared baby bird sounds ,he is year and half old.

Yep, you did the worst thing you can do: go after him and grab him! Some parrots are really funny that way... Just start from scratch again. Don't ask him for anything (no step up, no nothing), just open his cage and let him go and do whatever he wants - even if he flies/runs away from you. If he does, just stay calm, don't go after him, sit on the floor slowly and talk to him (say sweet things that you would usually say - I would say 'Sweet baby bird! Who's that birdie? Is that a pretty bird? Or is that a poopy bird? No, it's not a poopy bird, it's a pretty bird!" because that's what I say to them all the time or sing the songs I sing to them all the time) while holding a special treat in your hand (mine would kill for a peanut!) and wait for him to approach you. Do this in the afternoon, before the sun starts to set (so you can put some food in his cage and let him come back to it on his own with the evening) and go in prepared to spend some time sitting on the floor (maybe carry a pillow -LOL). The key to re-gaining their trust when they become scared of us because of us doing something wrong is to 'un-do' the action to show them that we realize it was a mistake and that we will be doing it right from now on. He might not come to you the first day but, if you keep on doing this and not asking him for anything, he will approach you.
