Crimson Bellied Conures - thoughts anyone

Postby k-yo » Tue Mar 04, 2014 1:34 am

Hi all,

I have been on lookout for a new feathered friend, and was leaning towards an Eclectus. Though after a few months of research, I have decided they might just be too much of a handful, due to diet and changes in behaviour after reaching maturity.

I have been reading up on Crimson Bellied conures and have actually contacted a breeder to visit his clutch on the weekend.

Just wanted to ask anyone's experiences with this breed, in terms of noise, nippiness, sexual maturity behaviour, or if anyone has had any bad experiences with changes in their bird...also one vs having two (as conures seem to be quite a social breed)?

Just a bit about myself, I actually grew up around a household with birds, as my mother had Lory's, budgies, cockatoos, finches, and mynah's. So i'm quite aware that most of them are real individuals and develop their own persona's.

Let me know your thoughts.

Regards,
from Sydney Australia

Welcome k-yo!

Do they have any parrot rescue groups in your area? A rescued adult would not have personality changes with maturity.

I've never had a crimson belly but I would assume they are very similar to other pyrrhuras...

In my opinion, definitely go with a conure. While I have not had experience with the specific kind of conure you are talking about I have a green cheek :gcc: and a sun :sun: and love them both dearly. Green cheeks are quieter, though my experience with my sun is that he is not near as loud as you would expect. I know that all birds are different and he may be just a quieter sun, but coming from his backround, he was re homed twice in a period of a year and a half, I think that the only reason a conure would have to be loud is if he is not getting the attention or care he needs.

Bottom line, I would definitely get a conure, it would be better if you could meet your pet first, but mine we bought before seeing them and they turned out just fine. If you can't meet your bird then write the owner and ask a bunch of questions. And do some research, you can find some really affordable, like new supplies.

Hope you have fun getting a new bird! :hatched:

I have two pyrrhura conures that are in the same family as the crimson bellied conures. Mine are green cheeks. The good thing about pyrrhuras in general is that they are considered to the quiet members of the conure group with the aratinga conures considered to be quite noisy. Although all pyrrhuras are not quiet (although my two are and have the same volume of vocalizations as a budgie or cockatiel), they are widely considered to be suitable for close dwellings such as apartments or condos because they are generally quiet.

They are also incredibly smart and acrobatic. Mine are also affectionate, although all birds are a bit different so not all pyrrhuras are inclined to be affectionate. I consider them a large bird wrapped up in a small package.

Enjoy your visit with the breeder and I believe that the crimson bellied conure would be a good selection for you.

Best of luck!
