I'm not in the US, the majority of pet shops here don't allow parrots or any other animal to be taken out of their cage. A few years ago I went to a different pet store and asked about a parrot and if it was possible to take it out of the cage to see how it was around people, the shop owner acted offended and responded that if I wanted it I should buy it and it will either like me or it won't. I then asked if it was ever removed from the cage and how it acted, the shop owner answered that of course she wouldn't take any birds out of their cages, they'd fly away. I shrugged and answered that she could lock the door, she just got more annoyed and answered that if I wasn't going to buy anything I should leave.

It wasn't like I was wasting her time, I was the only one in the store, I still go there though, it's the closest seed selling place and most pet stores around here are family run so you do tend to get alot of grumpiness, lol.

So, the grey is not allowed out, I haven't asked but I've never been into a pet shop where parrots were allowed out. Almost half the male staff seem to have fight scars/skin heads so I figure I wouldn't push it if they said no   . I have handled the bird by putting a hand through the bars and holding the bird's back while it was upside down, it closed it's eyes and let go with one of it's claws, it let me move it's leg band around with my other hand, I found it to be really friendly.

Dunno I just hate the idea of it becoming an ordnament, I had this idea of taking it around places with me, both my sennies are (after spending over six years confined to dark cages and terrified of humans) incredibly tame and have both been outside on a harness, but I'd worry about going to far out with them because they're so small. The grey seems way bigger than a pigeon and I like the idea of harness training it and taking it out and about with me.

If it's still there in a few days, I'm going to try and bring someone with me to get their oppinion on the bird.

Pet shops around here including the one with the grey don't raise or breed their own birds, breeders phone the shops and sell their unsold stock.

Does anyone know why michael decided to get a Cape Parrot instead of an african grey, I don't want a Cape I just wanted to know why he decided a Cape was a better choice than a grey?

Are greys supposed to be quieter than capes?

Why don't you ask Micheal, he is the only one qualified to answer this question.

Went to see the African Grey for the 3rd/4th time, the bird took a few minutes to recognise me and then started doing what looked exactly like the skirt dance to me. Is this good sign that the parrrot likes me in particular? Also, I wonder if the pet shop were wrong about his age as I wouldn't have thought a 2 year old would be doing the skirt dance?

Well, hold on...

My own Grey (a rehome) had a reputation of not liking many people, just two women (including me... and THAT took time) and now we're the best of friends... forever companions. She also loves my partner and lets him handle her... and she was thought to hate men! My Grey also used to cuss a person out like you wouldn't know... and she's really chilled out on that a lot. She has adapted to her new flock and says and whistles words and sounds she hears her flock members say/whistle.

That being said... my Grey is relatively quiet. She yells at me often ('Hey! Step up! NOWWW!" but she never, ever screams.

My advice... keep visiting this bird as I kept visiting my Grey. Ask to give the bird some treats and juice. See if the magic happens over time. You'll know you're a match if the bird chooses you.

My two cents: yes, Greys can be apartment birds. I live in a cottage, Chance is learning to fly, and all is well. She is not noisy.

That Grey is still there, I feel bad for it, I go to see it once every two weeks, it gets excited when it sees me and moves close for a tickle. It only has one perch in it's cage and has a very boring low grade meal. It growls at the staff and I'm not suprised.

Last time I was there, the woman (I think she's the owner of the shop) had a carrot in her hand, and had her four year old son (also carrying a carrot) walking after her. The woman stopped at the grey's cage, the grey stopped getting a tickle off me, looked and growled at the woman.

Shall we try to feed the parrot, the woman asked her child, he agreed. The woman, followed by the little boy, shoved the carrots between the bars saying do you want the carrot? Do you want the carrot? They caused the cage to shake, alarming the grey, I carefully asked if the woman wanted me to give the grey the carrot, the woman ignored me, continued to shake the cage at bit, much to the growling grey's upset before she finally took the carrots away and said to her son, the parrot isn't hungry, let's try the rabbits, and left.

The parrot carefully moved over to me again and I rubbed his head, while seriously thinking about next time bringing in the world's biggest carrot and repeatedly jabbing the woman with it whilst continuously asking her if she's hungry.

If that had happened to a dog at the pound, people wouldn't have ignored it. I wish there was someway to teach people that parrots have feelings too, when I'm around that grey I feel like I'm talking to a two year child whose been locked in a small box.

More and more I want to buy him and despite my family arguing against it, if he isn't gone soon, my heart may rule my head and I may end up with him.

Oh, my goodness, what an ignorant and cruel woman! And such a terrible example for the young boy! Poor, poor thing... I don't blame you one bit for wanting to take him away from that hell hole! I know I would have done it already!

Well...it would seem you are going down the same road I went down many years ago.My grey was a petshop bird...kept in a square aquarium. She had been there for almost a year and was similarly stressed. She was a biter and in fact bit me as I held her as I talked to the store owner about her.Well she bit alot of people, but as many have said, pet stores are very stressfull places. Its hard to save the world when you see situations like you describe and many have given into.I dont regret my choice to get her...and many more...It often works out and sometimes doesnt. In the end its really you that needs to decide.Best of luck
