Cloncurry Parrot

Postby lwkiss1 » Sat Apr 12, 2014 10:24 pm

I am new to the forum and so exited to be part of it. I bought 2 hand raised Princess of Wales Parakeets 2 months ago-- 1 yeAr old. They were sisters and did fine together in the store. However a month in in their new larger cage (26 x 20 dometop) they started seriously fighting. Even though there were 2 of everythingike perches at the same height in the cage, the smaller one would go over to the larger one and pick a fight. One day I got home and the smaller one had a black mark on its beak. I took them both in to be examined and the smaller one actually had a bite on the beak with two black marks. Looks like the larger one defended itself. The store immediately took the agressor back.

I always wanted 2 parrots and they now have a weaned cloncurry female for sale. I wonder if my Princess could get along with the Cloncurry better the her sister. Cage is a dometop AE 2620 (26 wide and 20 deep). Or should I abandon the idea of 2 of these grass keets getting among ?

Thanks!

Did you have the princess parakeets checked for clean bill of health? Birds often turn on each other when one is sick. The other possibility in my mind is that there was not enough space, they felt crowded. World Parrot Trust suggested a much larger space for them.

World Parrot Trust also said that pairing with the Cloncurry needed to be done when this bird was young as it is aggressive toward other birds especially other species. I had never heard of a Cloncurry parrot so I had to look it up. Very pretty bird.

Yes, both were healthy as the store tests all of its birds for DNA as well as other diseases. Good point on the Cloncurry being paired at a young age. I have read more about them and don't think I can take a risk by introducing another bird that may be aggressive with the Princess. Thanks!

I never ever trust those who sell animals as to health issues of that which they are selling. Although it is an expense that, I am sure, you could do without I prefer to have them vet checked by my own vet.

The cage is too small, that's why they fight.
