Hi; I know this is a late post but I had 2-alex's. 1-female and 1-abused male. My female was a sweetheart, and hardly ever made a sound except to greet me when I was out and came home. My male was abused and in 5-different home and only 5-months and made me bleed constantly. It took about a year with him and then he became the sweetest baby ever.but no they are not loud if given plenty of attention and toys [lots] as they are wood chewers, and of course really good fruits and veggies. The trick is to have lots for them to do and out of time from their cage[lots] and interaction with them.They are great big parrott's and to be treated with lots of respect. If they bite you will know it.Hope this little bit helps you some-river-7PS When my male talked he would say pretty girl as he heard me say it to female alex;

Here's another late reply, confirming the previous one basically :)

I had a female Alex for a year, raised her from 3 months old. She was sweet, gentle and generally quiet. Alexes are gentler and quiter than IRNs. Her only noisy period was for two weeks while she was weaning as she used to scream a lot before, during and after feeding but as she grew up she stopped on her own.

I can say she was one of the smartest parrots I trained, smarter than some CAGs I trained and way more responsive. She was a talker too and they have their own lovely voices. Super independent, I wouldnt worry about her handling any situation she faces on her own. She didn't over bond and she treated the household as her flock. She used to get very enthusiastic everytime one of us returned home and greeted us :)

Big big chewer and used to go through a new toy almost every week.

I highly recommend Alexes if you are NOT into cuddling and expect to spend lots of time outside the house.
