Adopting a Cockatiel

Postby Faraaz » Sat Jun 07, 2014 11:41 am

Hello Everyone,

Long time no seen! I have recently put a deposit on a Cockatiel which is being hand-fed and is coming from my local pet store. I will recieve the cockatiel in 2-5 Weeks. I now need help on purchasing a new cage and naming the cockatiel. I asked the lady at the petstore for an ideal cage and she showed me one of her cages. I thought it was over-priced and went online for another cage. I found this cage http://valuecrate.com/pcpt18.html and I thought it would be a good and reasonable cage to purchase. I just need to confirm that this is a good cage and it is ideal of a cockatiel. Also I need a name for my new baby, if you want to help these are the requirements:

- It should not be a common human name
- It should be a name which is suitable for both a boy and a girl
- Must be reasonably short
- Easy to pronounce easily
- Should be interesting and original
- It would be nice if it resembles the size and beauty of any Cockatiel

I also need someone with experience with Cockatiels to tell me what toys they need or if they even play with toys. I also need a good pellet diet to feed my bird.

Thanks is advance if you help me with anything!

At the moment I only have two things to say and they are just my opinion and should be regarded as such. I don't like the bar spacing, I think it is too wide. and the other is that I think that the cage is too small.

I agree. Bars too wide, cage waaaayyyyy too small. Tiels need much more room than 18 x 18 - that would only allow you to put one single perch in the middle or risk the bird not been able to even open his wings fully! My canaries have bigger cages than that. And I am the worst when it comes to names... no imagination whatsoever. I recently acquired a new breeding Timbrado hen and was lucky enough to find a natural Fawn Isabel (it's a color mutation where the bird lacks lack markings so it has only brown and pale and thin at that and the 'background' plumage is a soft beige without the yellowish undertone of the cinnamon mutation, which is a bit more common,- Timbrados are not bred for color but for song so unusual color mutations are VERY rare) and I named her Isabel - see what I mean about not been original at all when it comes to names? -LOL

I want to apologize for not asking in previous reply. How is Truman doing? I haven't heard anything concerning him for quite some time now, and really appreciate an update on him, if you don't mind, please.

He's doing fine. I actually have trained him to do everything I needed to. He's going great!

Can I ask if you're bilingual? Maybe a play on words or a word describing the personality of the bird would work as a name? I named my 'tiel Shiraarat, which means mischief.

Maybe Hermes? He was the fastest of the greek gods.
