What kind of conure do I have?

Postby xjanedoex17 » Thu Jun 12, 2014 6:18 pm

Hi I recently acquired a conure (I think a dusky headed one) :senegal: I adopted her. The problem is she is small about 7-8 inches compared to the 11inches I have read they are supposed to be. Also I read that they have a black beak where she has a yellow one. Can anyone hazard a guess as to what kind of conure she is? I would really like to read more about her. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154259917665037&set=a.10152068089595037.908944.511520036&type=3&theater https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154259917630037&set=a.10152068089595037.908944.511520036&type=3&theater

She looks like a female Plum-Headed Parakeet to me. Not a conure at all. Maybe someone with more experience can chime in though.

I think you are right! It sounds and looks exactly like her! Thank you for your help. I was a bit skeptical that she was a conure because of how small she is! :)

A conure is a parakeet and a parakeet is a conure. Neither is an ornithological name but just a common name that describes several species. Parakeet comes from the Spanish word 'periquito', which, in turn, comes from the French 'perroquet' and it means 'small parrot'. Conure comes from 'conurus' a classification that is no longer in use (it was replaced by aratinga, phyrrura, etc) and it comprised all the species with a long and pointed tail. Usually, conure is used for New World species while parakeet is used for Old World but there are 'cross-overs' like Monk Parakeet, for example.

There is a one-year-old male available for adoption at an Animal Rescue league fairly close to me. Beautiful looking bird.
