30 year old Senegal parrot

Postby myetmom » Sun Jul 20, 2014 12:33 am

I just took in an older Senegal parrot, 30+ years-old. Can anyone give me some advice in interacting with this bird. She's very sweet, but shy. What are their favorite treats? Do you think she talks? How can I connect with her? I have no information from her previous owners (they went into a nursing home)....Any information would be appreciated. We're very patient and loving with her, this must be a difficult transition. Thanks!!! :swaying: :swaying: :swaying:

I would spend a lot of time just talking to her, at the very least 2 or three 15 minute sessions per day and more sessions if possible, just keep them short until she relaxes with you. My Senegal likes carrots a lot so you could try some carrot cut into small sticks like thin French fries in size. I would try a variety of different veggies and fruits.
Senegals can talk if they want to, but the majority of them prefer whistles and other sounds. Funny thing about parrots is they may talk for you even if they haven't talked to anyone else, but the reverse is also true of them.
Is this your first bird? What is her name? Does she come to you while in her cage? Does she let you touch her?
Yes, this is a hard time for her, she grieves over the loss of a loved one in much the same manner as we do. So be patient with her and talk to her often, telling her that it is ok and that she is a good girl, she needs the company and the reassurance.

Yes, Wolf is right, just take your time and let her set the pace of how fast and how deep will the relationship evolve but the VERY first thing you need to do is take her to an AV for a super complete physical exam (CBC, chem panel, bile acids, ionized calcium, choanal and cloacal swabs, fecal and full body XRays) because, at her age and taking into consideration that her previous owners were old people, I am sure there are health issues and you need to find out asap so you can start treating her.

Welcome myetmom! and Kudos for giving a bird a home!

Go slow and give your new friend time to settle in and realize this is home now. She has lost her flock to the nursing home, and needs to be comforted.

Senegals have the ability to talk if they choose to learn. They do have very soft little speaking voices, so you have to listen hard. They learn to speak in context if you speak to them in context(assuming they decide to speak at all).

You can also try walnut and almond pieces or raisins for treats.

And definitely get that vet check!
