dusty birds?

Postby Polly-anna97 » Wed Jul 30, 2014 8:23 am

I've read that you cannot have a hahns macaw in the same room ( obviously not the same cage), as a cockatiel :greycockatiel: , because of the dust from the cockatiel. Does anyone have experience of this?
Would I have a similar problem with a pionus and a cockatiel :greycockatiel: ??

Thank you :danicing:

No, that's not right. Tiels (as well as cockatoos and greys) are considered 'dusty' birds but there is no danger of a cockatiel producing so much dust that it would hurt the respiratory system of another, bigger bird. Besides, it's all a matter of air circulation and filtering.

I have an African Grey Parrot ( CAG ), which is a dust bird. In the same room with her, I have a Senegal, an Amazon and a Parrotlet. Windows are open to varying degrees depending on the season and its temperatures and I use an air Purifier, and I have no problems.

Thanks Wolf. Would it not be a problem even though the hahns is only slightly bigger than the cockatiel? :greycockatiel: :greycockatiel: :greycockatiel: :greycockatiel: :greycockatiel:
Would I need to get air purifying gear?

A pionus is not a dust bird.
Now I do use an air purifier, but a Grey is much larger than a cockatiel. Two of my birds are smaller than my Grey, the Parrotlet is about the size of a love bird, and one bird larger than my Grey.

It doesn't matter what kind of bird you have, an air purifier during the winter (as well as a humidifier) is always recommended for the room where the bird is kept. Their respiratory system is 1,000 times more efficient than ours but it's also 1,000 times more delicate.
