I'm absolutely gutted right now, the owners only let someone else to see her (Rio) who made them a small cash offer. They didn't even let me know, so I arrived at the time we agreed- oh after sending them a confirmation text just to let them know I was setting off. The only response I got off of the owners when I asked why they had not let me know they had decided to sell "oh well you must understand it is in our best interests to get something for the bird rather than give it away" honestly they couldn't have been any nicer on the phone and when I visited the other day, really decent people they seemed but today they couldn't even refer to "the bird" by her name??? They certainly had me taken in and I normally have a good gut instinct about people. I'm fuming.
Sorry for not updating this afternoon as I see I've had more replies, I feel bad for not letting you know but I just had to calm down first...

Very sorry to hear this, and perhaps even more so for Rio than for you, as you would have made an excellent owner for her :(. It's sad how greed can take precedence over the wellfare of people/animals.

Oh, dear me! (my male senegal uses this expression all the time and it stuck), I am sooooo very sorry! But, let me tell you, Marie, that I've been dealing with animal rescue for a long time and I have found that you simply cannot trust people or your 'gut feeling' when it comes to this. Everybody lies to a certain extent (even if it's only little white lies meant to save somebody's feelings from getting hurt) but, if there is one subject where people lie the most is about their animals, the feelings they have for them, the quality of their care, etc. Everybody calls themselves 'an animal lover' but, in reality, there are very few of those...

I'm so sorry it didn't work out for Rio, for you, and and for Ollie.

I've always thought that there are two ways to pass an animal you love to someone else: give it to someone you trust to take good care of it, or charge a very high price under the assumption that anyone who pays it will take good care of what cost them so much. I hope the people who got Rio paid enough to consider her precious.

I'm sending a hug to you and scritches to Ollie.

Thank you everyone. I still feel really bad about the whole thing and can only hope that the owners didn't just hand Rio over to the first person who waved cash in their face.

Moving on though, it means I still have an empty cage or 2 for the next poor buggers who need a home. I may even actively seek one out shortly as although I think all birds are better in pairs, I think Ollie definitely would be for various reasons. Harlie I would like to wait a bit longer as I still have a lot of work to do with her but the goal is to find a middle aged companion for her too in the next 12 months or so.

Yes, parrots always benefit from having another parrot, even if they don't bond.
